Book Description
According to legend, the Mandylion was an image of Christ’s face imprinted on a towel, kept in Edessa. This acheiopoieton image (“not made by human hands”) disappeared in the eighteenth century. The first records of another acheiropoieton relic appeared in mid-fourteenth century France: a long linen bearing the image of Jesus’ corpse, known nowadays as the Holy Shroud of Turin. Some believe the Mandylion and the Shroud to be the same object, first kept in Edessa, later translated to Constantinople, France and Italy. Andrea Nicolotti traces back the legend of the Edessean image in history and art, focusing especially on elements that could prove its identity with the Shroud, concluding that the Mandylion and the Shroud are two distinct objects.

Unchaining the Lion
Author: Caleb Eissler
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1512714356
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
Does God exist? How can a good God allow pain and suffering? Can we trust the Bible? Is Jesus a copy of earlier pagan gods? Is Jesus the only way to God? What does the Bible actually say about homosexuality, transgenderism, and abortion? Did Jesus actually rise from the dead? After living as a strong Christian for most of his life, Caleb Eissler began to seriously doubt the very beliefs he had so tightly held to. When he entered college, he began wrestling with these very questions. Eissler realized that Christianity had to answer these questions and more if it was to be taken seriously. Ready to walk away from his faith if Christianity was found to be false, he embarked on a journey to find the truth. After years of research, Eisslers faith wasnt just sustained, but transformed. He not only found the claims of Christianity to be true, but also to be even more amazing than he had ever imagined. Eisslers doubt, research, and soul-searching fueled a new passion to help others rationally think through the same questions he had encountered. Unchaining the Lion is the culmination of Eisslers research and passion. Unchaining the Lion sets out to bridge the gap of misunderstanding between Christianity and secular culture by laying out the claims and evidence for Christianity, while addressing countless objections and questions along the way. To non-believers, Eissler provides a coherent and easy-to-follow explanation of the beliefs and the defenses of Christianity, while challenging them on their presuppositions about the world, the Bible, and God. To Christians, he provides a solid and deep defense of the claims of their faith that will surely help any believer. Unchain yourself from the shackles of doubt towards Christianity as Eissler shares a truth that the world must hear.

John the Baptist and the Last Gnostics
Author: Andrew Philip Smith
Publisher: Watkins Media Limited
ISBN: 178028991X
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
This fascinating study of the Mandeans of Iraq—considered the last of the Gnostics—traces their history back to John the Baptist and the days of early Christianity. Among the casualties of western intervention in Iraq and ISIS are the Mandeans of Southern Iraq. These peace-loving people are now fleeing to the west. They are the last Gnostics—the only surviving remnant of the ancient sects who taught the direct knowledge of God, created their own gospels and myths, and were persecuted as heretical by the church in the second and third centuries. The Mandeans place weekly river baptisms at the center of their religious life, and the primary exemplar of their religion is none other than John the Baptist. So, what is the real history of this mysterious and long-lived sect? Can the Mandean peoples really be traced back to the first century? And who was John the Baptist? This book follows the history of the Mandeans from their present plight back through their earliest encounters with the West, their place in Islamic counties, their possible influence on the Templars, back to their origins as a first century baptismal sect connected to John the Baptist, and beyond.

Having the Spirit of Christ
Author: Giovanni B. Bazzana
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300245629
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 333
Book Description
A provocative reinterpretation of accounts of spirit possession and exorcism in early Christianity The earliest Christian writings are filled with stories of possession and exorcism, which were crucial for the activity of the historical Jesus and for the practice of the earliest groups of his followers. Most critical scholarship, however, regularly marginalizes these topics or discards them altogether in reconstructing early Christian history. This innovative book approaches the study of possession from a different methodological angle by using a comparative lens that includes contemporary ethnographies of possession cross-culturally. Possession, besides being a harmful event that should be exorcized, can also have a positive role in many cultures. Often it helps individuals and groups to reflect on and reshape their identity, to plan their moral actions, and to remember in a most vivid way their past. When read in light of these materials, these ancient documents reveal the religious, cultural, and social meaning that the experience of possession had for the early Christ groups.

All Their Graves Are Occupied! His Tomb Is Empty!
Author: James Dove
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595199275
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 430
Book Description
It will simplify & expedite your search for God! The author is a relatively new Christian who has spent time acquiring life-changing information about Christianity. A new Christian usually takes the time to research that which they doubted for most of their lives, to verify it. They have a “show me” attitude and do not “take my word for it” from anyone. Thus they accept only researched information backed up with documented facts and established evidence. Knowledge gained from contemporary Christian scholars, the Bible and really revealing common sense have been used to at the least evoke emotions and a desire to learn more, and at the most for the reader to gain salvation using information that can be researched by looking for it in just about any history book, this book, or from the Bible itself. This book has no agenda nor desire to offend anyone’s beliefs, but rather verifying our belief through research. This was done to verify for the author, his family and anyone else that is searching for God. God is one, not a combination of many religions that contradict each other. God is not associated with contradictions or deceit, and there is just one religion with a living founder thus one religion is true while frankly the rest aren’t. This should bother no one that is after finding the real God and it should not matter which of the religions He truly resides in. Just that He resides. Mankind should simply be concerned with who God is, not being the person who has the right religion. The “right” religion is where God resides, not where we want Him to reside. This book will show that the evidence for the location and identity of God are extremely simple, and easy to find.
