Book Description
Now that we are retired, we travel around the country and meet folks who claim to be from Detroit. We ask, "Really? What neighborhood?" The response is some affluent suburban community. They react with mild surprise when we reply that we live "downtown in Woodbridge, not the street on the east side. We are named for the Woodbridge Farms, one of the first housing communities of the new century, the twentieth century, that is." We've lived here for over fifty years. For decades after the '67 Riots, one by one, businesses shuttered their doors and fled. The popular saying was "the last one out, please turn off the lights." But in truth, it wasn't long before the streetlights were already out of service. Over the years, we installed security, got rottweilers, obtained concealed-carry permits, and defended our home. During the summers, the lawns are manicured and the gardens are lush with food and beauty. Why do we stay? Perhaps it's a mixture of guilt for not volunteering to fight in a war I felt was wrong and a hardheadedness born in our deep Ozark roots. We don't like being told where we can live. We worked hard, and over the years, we found enjoyment and pleasure around the city—from a Friday night beer and friendship at the old Dakota Inn Rathskeller (the last German bar in Detroit) to Saturday morning walks with the dogs and a friend around Belle Isle to a Sunday morning mass at Saint Anne Parish (the second-oldest parish in the United States). We are finally beginning to emerge from Detroit's nightmare. Detroit is roaring back and reinventing itself. Come for a visit.

Book Description
'Deeply moving story of self-sacrifice and pride' - Jennifer Byrne, Australian Women's Weekly One family's epic tale of survival in tumultuous twentieth-century China. Li Feng grew up in Mao's communist China with her mother's motto burning in her ears - Success demands two things: unconditional sacrifice and absolute mental focus. Finally breaking free of her mother's overbearing clutches and fleeing to Sydney as an adult, Li struggled to make sense of her own lost childhood by piecing together her family's history. What she found was a heartbreaking tale of love and loss that echoed across four generations of women - from Silver Dollar, who fought to regain her dignity and change her destiny after being sold into a loveless marriage at the age of 13; to Ming Xiu, who was forced to make a choice no mother should ever have to make following the execution of her husband; to Li's mother Rong, who grew up as an outcast on the periphery of society but never gave up hope of a better life for herself and for her daughters. Despite economic and political upheaval, these women battled to offer their children a better future through sheer determination in the face of unimaginable adversity. Forged From Silver Dollar is an inspiring true story about Modern China, iron will and the strength of a mother's love.

Book Description
Winner, Jane Addams Children's Book Award A young girl navigates family and middle school dramas amid the prejudices and paranoia of the Cold War era in this “excellent example of historical fiction for middle grade readers” (School Library Journal) World War II is over, but the threat of communism and the Cold War loom over the United States. In Detroit, Michigan, twelve-year-old Marjorie Campbell struggles with the ups and downs of family life, dealing with her veteran father’s unpredictable outbursts, keeping her mother’s stash of banned library books a secret, and getting along with her new older “brother”—the teenager her family took in after his veteran father’s death. When a new girl from Germany transfers to Marjorie’s class, Marjorie finds herself torn between befriending Inga and pleasing her best friend, Bernadette, by writing in a slam book that spreads rumors about Inga. Marjorie seems to be confronting enemies everywhere—at school, at the library, in her neighborhood, and even in the news. In all this turmoil, Marjorie tries to find her own voice and figure out what is right and who the real enemies actually are. Includes an author’s note and bibliography.

Book Description
In Mystics and Messiahs--the first full account of cults and anti-cult scares in American history--Philip Jenkins shows that, contrary to popular belief, cults were by no means an invention of the 1960s. In fact, most of the frightening images and stereotypes surrounding fringe religious movements are traceable to the mid-nineteenth century when Mormons, Freemasons, and even Catholics were denounced for supposed ritualistic violence, fraud, and sexual depravity. But America has also been the home of an often hysterical anti-cult backlash. Jenkins offers an insightful new analysis of why cults arouse such fear and hatred both in the secular world and in mainstream churches, many of which were themselves originally regarded as cults. He argues that an accurate historical perspective is urgently needed if we are to avoid the kind of catastrophic confrontation that occurred in Waco or the ruinous prosecution of imagined Satanic cults that swept the country in the 1980s. Without ignoring genuine instances of aberrant behavior, Mystics and Messiahs goes beyond the vast edifice of myth, distortion, and hype to reveal the true characteristics of religious fringe movements and why they inspire such fierce antagonism.
