Book Description
Excerpt from Sherwin's Weekly Political Register, Vol. 3: Oct. 3, 1818 In treating on this subject m a formernumber, I described afew of the methods by which the B1 had been sweated down in passing through the two House The principal of these were the altering the number of the quorum froin two to three, and thereby reducing the numbe1 of quorums fromfour to two, and the curtailing the powe1s oi the Com missioners. But these were not all. '1 heir grave and re verend Lordships were not sat1sfied with excluding all Char1t1es, except schools, from investigation. They have made another curtailment quite as formidable aa'tbe others, by excepting, not only the Universities and the public schools down to Rugby, but generally all charities havmg special visitors, .governors, or overseers. From the enqui ries of the Education Committee, it appears that almost. Every Conside1able charity is subject to special visitation. The consequence of this will necessarily be, that the cha tities in which the A1istocracy_ are principally interested will 1emain untouched by the Commissionms, and in num berless instances, they will remain totally unknown. In -conside1ing this subject, it should always be recollected that the disclosures that have been made 1n consequence of Mr. Brougham' s enquiries, a1e but the beginning of what would have followed, if the matter had been fully gone into. They hear about the same proportion to the whole as the Civil List bears to the annual expenses of the Government. Book Description
Excerpt from Sherwin's Weekly Political Register, Vol. 4: April 3, 1819 It 15 no doubt particularly gratifying to the people of this kingdom, once more to pay the debts of our beloved prince; debts so much to the honour of the country, and which so forcibly display some of the blessings we are to expect under the king, whom God Almighty has appointed next to fill the throne of the only free nation upon earth. Book Description
Excerpt from Sherwin's Weekly Political Register, Vol. 4: Dec. 19, 1818 I have much to say, and with your leave, will'say a part, at. Least, of what I know and think. You perceive'thatl do not profess attachment to the cause, as, without. Definltion, it is familiarly called. That cause, if I understand it, has little to merit a philosophical reformer's' support, except as it'may he the first link in the chain of political revolution, through which the world is evidently proceeding. Truth is my object, and the influence which unmixed truth must have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
First published in 1979, this book was the first, full-length study of working-class movements in London between 1800 and the beginnings of Chartism in the later 1830s. The leaders and rank and file in these movements were almost invariably artisans, and this book examines the position of the skilled artisan in politics. Starting from the social ideals, outlook and the experience of the London artisan, Dr Prothero describes trade union, political, co-operative, educational and intellectual movements in the first forty years of the century. Setting a scene of alternating growth and contraction in trade, successive hostile governments and the increasing articulation of working-class consciousness the author shows that artisans could be no less militant, radical or anti-capitalist than other groups of working class men.

Book Description
Ballads and songs of Peterloo is an edited collection of poems and songs written following the Peterloo Massacre in 1819. This collection, which includes over seventy poems, were published either as broadsides or in radical periodicals and newspapers. Notes to support the reading of the texts are provided, but they also stand alone, conveying the original publications without diluting their authenticity. Following an introduction outlining the massacre, the radical press and broadside ballad, the poems are grouped into six sections according to theme. Shelley’s Masque of Anarchy is included as an appendix in acknowledgement of its continuing significance to the representation of Peterloo. This book is primarily aimed at students and lecturers of Romanticism and social history.
