The Age of Projects
Author: Maximillian E. Novak
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442692995
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 417
Book Description
"The Projecting Age" was a term the English novelist Daniel Defoe used to describe the end of the seventeenth century. This term could just as easily be used, however, to describe the period known as the "Long Eighteenth Century" (1660-1789). The Age of Projects uses the notion of a project as a key to understanding the massive social, cultural, political, literary, and scientific transitions that occurred in Europe during this time. The contributors to this collection examine fraudulent, grandiose, altruistic, and idealistic projects that reveal the period's radical breaks from the past and its preoccupation with the future. Examining topics as diverse as Jonathan Swift's satire on the possibility of a computer, to Gottfried Leibniz's effort to build one, and Edmund Burke's prediction that the project of democratic governance would be taken over by greedy adventurers, this volume provides significant insight into the period's ambitions for an improved future. A well-balanced collection by leading scholars from diverse disciplines, The Age of Projects is a significant contribution to intellectual history, literary history, and the history of science.

Practical Godliness
Author: Vincent Alsop
Publisher: Soli Deo Gloria Ministries
ISBN: 9781573581455
Category : Bible
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Scripture is quite clear that "faith without works is dead." But faith, accompanied by works, is such an ornament and testimony to faith that, according to Paul, "adorns the doctrine of God in all things" (Titus 2:10). It is this text of Scripture that Vincent Alsop, a Puritan pastor, exposits in this treatise. We are not to alter the doctrines of God; we will never improve upon them, but we may and do adorn them with our holy lives and godly conduct. That is practical godliness! Says Alsop: "The harmony of the Christian religion has been disordered, its beauty blemished, and much filth thrown in its face . . . by the unsuitable professions of those who profess it. In short, it has been wounded in the house of its friends."Appendixed is a rare sermon by Alsop entitled "The Sinfulness of Strange Apparel, a biblical theology of fashion, which is so relevant to our culture.
