Book Description
Charles Kingsley (12 June 1819 - 23 January 1875) was a broad-church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. He was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. Kingsley's interest in history is shown in several of his writings, including The Heroes (1856), a children's book about Greek mythology, and several historical novels, of which the best known are Hypatia (1853), Hereward the Wake (1865) and Westward Ho! (1855).

Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons for the Times Though the question was primarily addressed to those standing in his immediate presence, yet, as it has been incorporated into the divine record, it thereby becomes virtually addressed to every thoughtful mind, and is to us, here and now, of as vital personal concern as to those who first heard it from his own lips. That we may get this question the more directly and appreciatively before us, I will, first of all, make a general but brief statement. Book Description
Excerpt from Faith and Patience: A Sermon for the Times Isaiah prophesied during some of the best, and some of the worst periods of Jewish history. It is not sur prising therefore that his writings should reflect his times. Accordingly we find them, as we sometimes find the skies, piled with tremendous masses of angry cloud, but broken here and there with patches of blue, so pure and rich, as to reassure every beholder of the necessary evanescence of the storm, and of the certainty of the returning calm. Here are some specimens Of these clouds, Behold the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away. In the city is left desolation and the gate is smitten with destruction. Now look through the openings in these clouds, and see how rich a blue lies beyond. Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation. In other words, these clouds that enshroud Zion, and fill the hearts of the timid and unbelieving with dismay, are only the dust of Jehovah's feet as he comes to lay in Zion that precious corner stone. Let this truth take fast hold Of the mind. And what will be the effect? He that believeth it will not make haste. He will not fret with impatience at the tardiness of divine providence, for when God begins to build, the cost has been counted, and the work will assuredly be completed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Extension of the Indefinite: A Sermon of the Times Gentlemen: I have the honor to respond without a moment's hesitation to your flattering note, of this appropriate date, requesting a copy, for publication, of my recent discourse on the extension of the indefinite. I need hardly say that the discourse was prepared without expectation that it would be published, or would be known beyond the circle of that appreciative audience which I have for some years past, I think not unsuccessfully, endeavored to please. It is particularly gratifying to me that the request for publication has come from an association combining members of the Church of St. Latitudinarius and of the Church of All Sects, as the unification of these parishes has been one of the aims which I have for a long time consistently, though not always professedly, had in view. I am persuaded that Broadwalk and Spreadabroad already are invisibly one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Five Sermons for the Times: Against Puseyism, on the One Hand, and Dissent, on the Other Men and brethren, may God give us an ear to hear his message today! To-day is the anniversary of our national deliverance from a most fearful wickedness, and our church has appointed a service of thanksgiving for it. Well does it become any nation to be thankful for deliverance from the darkness, and idolatry, and soul-slavery, of popery - and well does it become a nation, so delivered, to be thankful for the farther deliverance from the bloody machinations of the enemies of God and his Christ. To-day, I trust, our watchmen, our minister-watchmen, will take up the note from our Prayer-book, and many a spirit-awakening blast will be sent forth from the trumpet of protestantism, and the dormant energies of many a sleeping protestant be called into life, and many a son of our protestant church be roused to put on the whole armour of God to withstand in the evil day which is coming, until the sea and the shore, the mountain and the valley, the rock and the plain, the Queen on her throne and the villager in his hamlet, echo back the strain, "withstand the enemies of God and his Christ." - These are trying times for the church of God, and I fear that many will be sifted and fall, and that the tail of the red dragon will draw many stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And to-day the Lord is saying to the watchmen through the length and breadth of the land, "Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them ... whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning, if the sword come and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head - he heard the sound of the trumpet and took not warning, his blood shall be upon him."
