Book Description
Over nearly fifty years, Eleanor Ross Taylor has established herself as one of the foremost southern poets of her generation. Captive Voices gathers selections from Taylor's five previous books along with a generous helping of new poems. Scintillating, unusual, passionate, and profound, the poems range from contemporary pieces about a bag lady on a bus, to historical pieces about settlers held hostage and a wartime nurse caring for British wounded, to intensely personal poems about her dislike for her grandmother and worries about her son. The title poem -- a real tour de force -- explores the notion of captivity on several levels as it speaks to the suffering we all endure, some of which is of our own making. Decidedly regional yet determinedly universal, the poems in this remarkable volume, along with a foreword by Ellen Bryant Voigt, attest to the singular talent of a woman justly described as "a poet of genius."

Book Description
The American South has a passionate affinity with literature that no other region of the country can claim and its heritage is evoked and constantly reinvented through the words of its writers. Internationally acclaimed photographer Curt Richter was initially commissioned by Louis D. Rubin Jr. to photograph the founding members of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. The first author to sit for him for the series was Eudora Welty and the last was Alice Walker. The project grew and, over a seven-year period, he photographed over two hundred writers associated with the South. Nearly one hundred of these images appear in A Portrait of Southern Writers, beyond any doubt the most stunning and significant collection of photographs of Southern writers ever gathered. Richter does not focus his lens on capturing the totality of a writer's life but instead presents a moment of reflection in the face of the pressure of, and struggles with, creativity. What emerges is a collection of spectacular images which silently offer us insight into these writers' lives.

Book Description
In her debut poetry collection, Jasmine Elizabeth Smith takes inspiration from Oklahoma Black history. In the wake of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, Jim Waters makes the difficult decision to leave behind his lover, Beatrice Vernadene Chapel, who as a Black woman must navigate the dangerous climate that produced the Jim Crow South and Red Summer. As Beatrice and Jim write letters to one another and hold imagined conversations with blues musicians Ida B. Cox, Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Ethel Waters, and the ghosts of Greenwood, the couple interrogates themes of blues epistemology, Black feminism, fraught attachments, and the way in which Black Americans have often changed their geographical regions with the hope of improving their conditions. The poetry collection South Flight is a eulogy, a blues, an unabashed love letter, and ragtime to the history of resistance, migration, and community in Black Oklahoma.
