The Selection and Promotion of the Successful Police Officer
Author: Lawrence R. O'Leary
Publisher: Charles C Thomas Pub Limited
ISBN: 9780398038052
Category : Police
Languages : en
Pages : 183
Book Description
Guidelines to help police personnel administrators develop and implement systematic selection and promotion procedures are presented. The objective of the book is not to identify specific tests or selection devices, but rather to outline a conceptual approach to selection and promotion and to provide basic tools for implementing the approach. Basically, the approach involves analyzing each job in the police department; identifying the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for performance of each job; developing a logical selection plan that is fair and psychometrically sound; and monitoring to minimize select errors and to modify procedures as necessary. Guidelines for identifying qualities necessary for good job performance at the ranks of line officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain are provided. Specific methods for developing a selection plan are elaborated, with particular attention to establishing minimum qualifications through testing, interviewing, and job simulation. Fair employment issues and practices are also examined. Basic information on statistical analysis as it relates to selection and promotion procedures is provided. Also included is a description of the assessment center, a procedure in which candidates for promotion participate in simulation exercises designed to generate job-related behavior. The author has installed these centers for police agencies in Kansas City, Mo., and Rochester, N.Y., for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and for other agencies and organizations.
