This volume explores how religious and spiritual actors engage for environmental protection and fight against climate change. Climate change and sustainability are increasingly prominent topics among religious and spiritual groups. Different faith traditions have developed "green" theologies, launched environmental protection projects and issued public statements on climate change. Against this background, academic scholarship has raised optimistic claims about the strong potentials of religions to address environmental challenges. Taking a critical stance with regard to these claims, the chapters in this volume show that religious environmentalism is an embattled terrain. Tensions are an inherent part of religious environmentalism. These do not necessarily manifest themselves in open clashes between different parties but in different actions, views, theologies, ambivalences, misunderstandings, and sometimes mistrust. Keeping below the surface, these tensions can create effective barriers for religious environmentalism. The chapters examine how tensions are manifested and dealt with through a range of empirical case studies in various world regions. What is evil? Were did it come from. This is a fundamental negative aspect of the Human condition that has engaged theologians, mystics and philosophers for centuries. As the book explores the meaning of the Chartres Zodiac, it first starts by exploring the Celestial Zodiac and Precession. And also other pertinent astronomical facts. It then explores landscape zodiacs in general, including those found in Britain. In looking at Chartres we first examine its history, going back to the time when it was a Celtic Temple, and the later when the under-crypt was used as a Mithraic Temple by officers in the Roman Army. The book then explains how the author discovered twelve line radiating out from the centre of the Cathedral, and thence the realisation that we might have a giant zodiac. The identification of a number of towns and cities of equidistant radius around the Cathedral confirmed the Zodiac hypothesis. Important places such as Plymouth, Gloucester, Norwich, Leiden, Strasbourg and Montreaux. Hat was remarkable was that one line passed through Paris, and then when extended beyond the Zodiac circumference passed through Berlin. Another Line reached Vienna and Bratislava. Another reached Barcelona. Another reached Madrid. The book then explores the geography, history and culture of each zodiac segment to see if there is anything that relates to the nature of the zodiac sign of that segment. The book finally points the way to the future, leaving future researchers to continue the exploration of what this remarkable building means to us.

Subversive Spirituality links the practice and study of Christian spirituality with Christian mission. It develops a twofold thesis: grace, spiritual disciplines, and mission practices are inseparably linked in the mission of Jesus, of the early church, and of several historical renewal movements, as well as in a contemporary field research sample; and amidst the collapse of space and time evidenced by our culture's increasingly hurried pace of life, more time and space are needed for regular solitary and communal spiritual practices in church, mission, and leadership structures if Christian mission is to transform people and culture in our time. This requires a subversion of the collapsed spatial and temporal codes that have infected our Christian institutions. Jensen employs methods and approaches from a variety of academic disciplines to explore both spirituality in terms of space and time and mission in terms of deed and word. Specifically, Jensen examines the spirituality and mission of Jesus, the early church, the apostolic fathers, Origen, the Devotio Moderna, the early Jesuits, David Brainerd, and several women in 19th century Protestant missions. He considers the spirituality and mission that have arisen within the postmodern generations born after 1960. Based on the theological, historical, cultural, and field analyses of this study, a model for spirituality and mission is proposed. The model addresses the contemporary collapse of space and time and appears to have widespread applicability to diverse cultures and eras. Jensen's model is applied to the pluralistic and postmodern milieu of North America with recommendations for spirituality and mission in church, mission, and educational structures. A derivative model for teaching and practicing spirituality and mission in the academy, which also has application for non-formal leadership development structures, is also proposed.
