Neoplastic Diseases of the Blood
Author: Peter H. Wiernik
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521791366
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1240
Book Description
In this fourth edition of the classic work on malignant blood cancers, the team of editors and over 100 international leaders in the field provide a comprehensive text on the diagnosis and treatment of all hematologic malignancies, both common and rare. The sixty-two chapters are divided into sections on Chronic Leukemias and Related Disorders, Acute Leukemias, Myeloma and Related Disorders, Lymphomas, and Supportive Care, with a devoted editor for each section. This extensively revised and updated edition reflects the tremendous progress in the science and treatment of hematologic malignancies during the eight years since the third edition in 1995. Revisions and new chapters include coverage of stem cell transplantation, molecular genetics, monoclonal antibodies, and new treatment modalities. The excellent discussions of current therapies for all hematologic neoplasms are more detailed than those in general oncology or hematology texts, making this an essential reference for all hematologists and oncologists.

Visualizing Mortality Dynamics in the Lexis Diagram
Author: Roland Rau
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319648209
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 175
Book Description
This book visualizes mortality dynamics in the Lexis diagram. While the standard approach of plotting death rates is also covered, the focus in this book is on the depiction of rates of mortality improvement over age and time. This rather novel approach offers a more intuitive understanding of the underlying dynamics, enabling readers to better understand whether period- or cohort-effects were instrumental for the development of mortality in a particular country. Besides maps for single countries, the book includes maps on the dynamics of selected causes of death in the United States, such as cardiovascular diseases or lung cancer. The book also features maps for age-specific contributions to the change in life expectancy, for cancer survival and for seasonality in mortality for selected causes of death in the United States. The book is accompanied by instructions on how to use the freely available R Software to produce these types of surface maps. Readers are encouraged to use the presented tools to visualize other demographic data or any event that can be measured by age and calendar time, allowing them to adapt the methods to their respective research interests. The intended audience is anyone who is interested in visualizing data by age and calendar time; no specialist knowledge is required. This book is open access under a CC BY license.

Outcomes Assessment in Cancer
Author: Joseph Lipscomb
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139442749
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 682
Book Description
Cancer touches the lives of millions worldwide each year. This is reflected not only in well-publicized mortality statistics but also in the profound - though much more difficult to measure - effects of cancer on the health-related quality of life, economic status, and overall well-being of patients and their families. In 2001, the US National Cancer Institute established the Cancer Outcomes Measurement Working Group to evaluate the state of the science in measuring the important and diverse impacts of this disease on individuals and populations. The findings and recommendations of the working group's 35 internationally recognized members are reported in Outcomes Assessment in Cancer, lucidly written and accessible to both researchers and policy makers in academia, government, and industry. Originally published in 2005, this volume provides a penetrating yet practical discussion of alternative approaches for comprehensively measuring the burden of cancer and the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic interventions.

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119011035
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 490
Book Description
Survival analysis deals with the distribution of life times, essentially the times from an initiating event such as birth or the start of a job to some terminal event such as death or pension. This book, originally published in 1980, surveys and analyzes methods that use survival measurements and concepts, and helps readers apply the appropriate method for a given situation. Four broad sections cover introductions to data, univariate survival function, multiple-failure data, and advanced topics.

The Truth in Small Doses
Author: Clifton Leaf
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1476739986
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 513
Book Description
A decade ago Leaf, a cancer survivor himself, began to investigate why we had made such limited progress fighting this terrifying disease. The result is a gripping narrative that reveals why the public's immense investment in research has been badly misspent, why scientists seldom collaborate and share their data, why new drugs are so expensive yet routinely fail, and why our best hope for progress-- brilliant young scientists-- are now abandoning the search for a cure.
