Book Description
Excerpt from Michell's Seeds, Bulbs, Plants, 1922: Fertilizers, Garden Tools, Poultry Supplies, Insect Destroyers Our grass seeds are rigidly tested for purity and germination at the growing point, in the laboratories of the United States Department of Agriculture and by ourselves, and will be found of highest average. We make special formulas to suit various soils, climatic and local conditions. Our grass mixtures as sold have been based on many tests and on years of careful study; they are properly blended and will give splendid satisfaction. Quantity to Sow for Lawns. From very exhaustive tests and experiments, we have found that in general too small a quantity has been recommended in the past; it requires sufficient seed to be sown if you want a quick permanent effect. On a small scale a quart will usually seed a space of 10 x 10 feet though twice that quantity is better; 6 to 8 or 10 bushels of 20 lbs. Per bushel on new ground without grass, is the proper quantity per acre; 1 peck is needed for a space of 1000 square feet; bushel for a space 2000 square feet; 1 bushel for a space 4000 square feet or say 40 x 100 feet. For Putting Greens we advise 100 lbs. Of seed for greens 100 x 100 feet. For Fairways, 8 to 10 bushels per acre. For Pasture and Hay Fields, 4 to 5 bushels per acre, based on a 20 pound bushel. Book Description
Excerpt from Olds' Catalog, 1922, Vol. 35: Seeds, Bulbs, Plants, Seed Potatoes; Garden Tools, Poultry Supplies, Insecticides Mr. Riegel sent us three small tubers of the new seedling for trial and we were so well pleased with the way they turned out that the next year we bought the entire stock with exclusive rights. We worked away on them during the next three years increasing the Stock as fast as possible and feeling better pleased with them each year. Description. Olds' White Beauty is just the type that is wanted for an all-round, main crop, white-skinned potato. It is the right shape, nearly round to oval oblong; symmetrical and regular in form; eyes very shallow, so shallow that as one of our customers says: You hardly know they have an eye; beautiful white skin, slightly russeted; strong, vigorous grower, with dark stalks and purple blossoms like Rurals. Earlier than other late sorts. We have always considered W'hite Beauty about the same as Rural New Yorker in season, medium late, but Mr. Dexter, who grew part of our stock, thinks White Beauty is earlier even than Green Moun tain and Green Mountain is earlier than Rural. He says About half our Green Mountain were planted before and half after the White. Beauty. From the time potatoes set until harvest the White Beauty had larger tubers and when we har vested the tops were about a week more mature.
