Book Description
Breeding of crop plants to make them more adapted to human agricultural systems has been on-going during domestication the last 10 000 years. However, only recently with the invention of the Mendelian principles of genetics and the subsequent development of quantitative genetics during the twentieth century has such genetic crop improvement become based on a general theory. During the last 50 years plant breeding has entered a molecular era based on molecular tools to analyse DNA, RNA and proteins and associate such molecular results with plant phenotype. These marker trait associations develop fast to enable more efficient breeding. However, they still leave a major part of breeding to be performed through selection of phenotypes using quantitative genetic tools. The ten chapters of this book illustrate this development.

Book Description
The authoritative reference on nonparametric methods for evaluating longitudinal data in factorial designs Broadening the range of techniques that can be used to evaluate longitudinal data, Nonparametric Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Factorial Experiments presents nonparametric methods of evaluation that supplement the generalized linear models approach. Emphasizing the practical application of these methods in statistical procedures, this book provides a unified approach for the analysis of factorial designs involving longitudinal data that is appropriate for metric data, count data, ordered categorical data, and dichotomous data. Topics covered include nonparametric models, effects and hypotheses in experimental design, estimators for relative effects, experiments for one and several groups of subjects, multifactorial experiments, dependent replications, and experiments with numerous time points. The basic mathematical principles for the methods introduced here are described in theory, consistent with the book's minimal math requirements. Simple approximations for small data sets are provided, as well as ample chapter exercises to test skills, an appendix that includes original data for the examples used throughout the book, and downloadable SAS-IML macros for implementing the more extensive calculations. All applications are designed to be useful in many fields. Generously supplemented with more than 110 graphs and tables, Nonparametric Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Factorial Experiments is an essential reference for statisticians and biometricians, researchers in clinical trials, psychological studies, and in the fields of forestry, agriculture, sociology, ecology, and biology, as well as graduate students in statistics and biostatistics.

Book Description
Plant breeders continue to make significant advances in developing high yield ing, adaptable, disease-free crops. These advances, however, are not realized until an efficient seed production system is in place that rapidly increases geneti cally superior crops and makes them available to the consumer in large quantities at a reasonable cost. Successful seed production requires seed to be genetically pure, free of admixtures, and able to establish rapidly a uniform stand. Seed production is a complex process. Rigorous production criteria are followed by both seed producer and seed companies to ensure that high-quality seed is produced and marketed. These criteria become even more stringent in hybrid seed production. This volume identifies the factors most critical in a successful seed production operation. The fundamental considerations common to all seed crops are established in Part I, Principles of Seed Production. From this founda tion, the practices of seed production are provided in detail in Part II, Seed Production of Specific Crops.

Book Description
This book gives a complete picture of the canola crop including its history, botany, genetics, distribution, breeding and biotechnology, production, processing, composition, nutritional properties and utilization of the seed, oil and meal, as well as an economic profile. While the main focus in this book is on canola of Canadian origin, its cousin crop oilseed rape will also be discussed to a lesser extent. The work provides up-to-date information on the crop and highlights areas where research and development is either needed or is in process. - Provides extensive information on the canola plant, including breeding, genetic engineering for trait development, and seed morphology and composition - Editors and contributors are global leaders in canola research and application - Offers a comprehensive overview of canola oil and meal composition, nutrition, and utilization
