It has been long debated whether or not tidal channels meander through space and time. If so, at what magnitude did they meander; and how did their changes in space and time relate to the morphodynamics of salt marsh development and facies configuration of transgressive valleys? Many have argued that the laws that govern the fluvial streams are equally valid for tidal channels and tidal channel networks. However, there is a lack of field measurements to support the aforementioned statements. Further, the dynamic relationship between tidal channel network development and salt marsh evolution was poorly understood in terms of erosion vs. accretion in response to sea-level changes. Also, models of salt marsh initiation and tidal channel development within transgressive valleys in the US Atlantic coastal plains are not well studied as compared with those of the North Sea in Europe. In an attempt to systematically study the dynamic relationships between the salt marshes and tidal channel networks of transgressive valleys and other system forcings (such as sediment supply, sea-level changes, topographic control, and halophyte production), I chose the Great Marsh area at Lewes, Delaware. To better address these issues, other estuarine tidal basins and incised valleys along the Delaware Bay and Atlantic coasts were studied to serve as modern analogs for the support of my findings in the Great Marsh area. The following major topics/themes are covered and explored in this research study: geologic framework of the study area, modern-ancient analogs, sources of sediment supply, morphometric properties of tidal meander planforms, construction of the paleotopography, hypsometric and volumetric analyses of the incised valley fill, Holocene evolution of the Great Marsh, modern analogs of marsh initiation and tidal meandering development, and discussions of various topics such as tidal channel network initiation and development, incised valley system's self-adjustment in response to changes in sea-level and sediment supply, and facies models as applicable to the transgressive incised valley fills. Vertical accretion, the aggregation of material on a wetland surface, depends on organic matter accumulation and mineral sedimentation. We measured suspended sediment concentrations by total suspended solids (TSS), sediment deposition and vertical accretion rates in four marsh zones in the central basin of Mugu Lagoon, a salt marsh dominated by Salicornia pacifica. Mean TSS was 21±1 mg l-1 (Mean±SE) between February and May 2012, which is within the middle of the range of other salt marshes. Mean sediment deposition ranged from 0.00 g m-2 day-1 to 1.29 g m-2 day-1, which is in the low end of the range of other salt marshes. No net vertical accretion was observed between August 2011 and May 2012. Our results indicate that for high and high-mid marsh zones, sedimentation was highest adjacent to the creek. Interestingly, organic matter concentration in TSS varied with tide height, but mineral content did not. While more data are needed to confirm whether these trends occur over longer time periods, our study is one of the first to characterize spatial and temporal variation in sediment dynamics for a salt marsh dominated by Salicornia species.

Since 1970, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, has been using dredged sediments from the Houston ship channel to create and restore salt marshes in Galveston Bay. Some projects have failed due to excessive sediment erosion or siltation. The research reported here applies an engineering approach to analysis of tidal creeks innatural and beneficial use marshes of Galveston Bay. The hydrodynamic numerical model, DYNLET, was used to assess circulation in marsh channels. A preliminary sediment transport model was developed to analyze erosion and deposition for the same channels. In situ flume experiments were conducted to determine the sediment erodibility in natural and constructed marshes. A natural reference marsh, Elm Grove, was studied to understand marsh hydrodynamics and model calibration. The model results show that DYNLET can largely duplicate the marsh hydrodynamics and the sediment transport model can provide preliminary indication of erosion in tidal creeks. Analysis of the preliminary channel layout of the beneficial-use marsh demonstrated thatchannels will have sufficient circulation and optimum velocities.
