Book Description
Excerpt from Second Year in German The present volume is a continuation of the First Year in German. The favorable reception accorded to the latter has encouraged the author to continue in this volume the general plan of its predecessor. The fact that the Second Year is intended for more advanced students necessitated some changes, which, however, are of slight importance. The Reading Matter in most of the Lessons of this volume is longer than in the first book. This was made possible without burdening the student with too large a number of new words in each Lesson, first by an extensive use of the vocabulary of the First Year in the present volume, and second by devoting much attention to a systematic treatment of the derivation and formation of words. As to the first, it naturally resulted in a considerable enlargement of the German English and english-german vocabulary at the end of the volume; but on the other hand it affords the decided advantage of a review of the previous year's wor.k As regards the second, it enables the student to acquire a knowledge of the relationship existing between words belonging to the same family, i. E., hav ing the same root. The more familiar the student becomes with this relationship of words, the less the necessity of memorizing words and their meaning. Book Description
Excerpt from First Year in German The natural method (which has been very aptly called the plunge and struggle method) goes to the other extreme. It subordinates systematic study and the practical knowledge of grammar to the acquisition of words and phrases, exercising and cultivating the memory rather than the discriminative faculty of the student. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Old High German I have sought to avoid this danger, and to make my grammar from the outset clear and comprehensible in itself, and on the other hand I have strenuously tried to avoid the faults of many elementary primers, which attain apparent clearness at the expense of accuracy. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of German An effort has been made throughout to set a task that should be within the reach of the average pupil. Especial pains have been taken to limit the vocabulary to words of com mon occurrence. That the pupil should develop a feeling for German construction and word arrangement is far more essen tial than that he should at the outset have an extensive vocab ulary at his command. The ability of the average pupil to assimilate a large number of new words with each successive lesson has frequently been overrated. Book Description
Excerpt from First Year German I take pleasure in acknowledging my obligations to the per sons from whom I have had aid. Mr. M. Grant Daniell did me the favor to read a part of the proof-sheets with his accustomed care. To Miss Anna B. Eckstein, Principal of the Modern School of Languages, Boston, and to Miss F rida von Unwerth of the School of Ethical Culture, New York, I owe heartiest thanks for their criticisms and suggestions, especially in connection with the proof-reading of the exercises. Their thorough knowledge of their own language, combined with their insight as teachers, has made this help invaluable.
