Book Description
Excerpt from Second French Book The first french book was drawn up according to the best continental methods, of which the above quotation admirably expresses the aim. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. Book Description
Excerpt from Newson's Second French Book One who has worked through the first book in this series will hardly need an introduction to the second. The page will have a familiar look, and the method of work will not seem strange. It is probably difficult for both teacher and pupil to realize that they have done so much with only the present tense. A German once said to me in connection with language teaching, A man can live and die in the present tense. The present tense may do very well for ordinary people, living in the plains, but one needs to mount higher and go deeper in order to get the best out of life. The different tenses with their shades of meaning and the subjunctive with its delicate implications lie ahead of, us. Through them we shall review the past, anticipate the future, and soar and sink on the wings of desire or fear. The pupil is going to feel more like a real French child in this book. He is going to read the story of a boy who is of about his own age and who has some strange experiences. He must make this boy's experiences his own, suffer with him for his mistakes, rejoice with him over his successes, enter into his play and his work. If the authors have done their work well, the book is not above the thought and experience of the pupil. He should be able to speak in the first person as well as to narratethe experience of some other boy. Pierre should not become Peter, but Peter, Pierre. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. As the knowledge of a language evidently consists of these three essential acquirements, to neglect one of them is a mistake that no serious argument can justify. Book Description
Excerpt from Second French Exercise Book I shall feel truly thankful for any criticisms and com ments which may be addressed to me with the View of rendering both the grammar and the two exercise books more useful to the young. The way in which I may make use of such communications will, I hope, be the best proof of my gratitude, and of the fact that I am more anxious to be taught and to teach what is right, than to conceal the fact that I am liable to make mistakes.
