Book Description
Excerpt from The History and Government of West Virginia Part III concludes the work with a mere outline in bistori cal perspective of the origin and general structure of the Fed eral Union, which is essential to a perfect understanding of the State, whose existence the Union presupposes. This out line is intended as an introduction to the study of the Federal Constitution. While it is brief it contains quite as much as is usually devoted to this subject in a work of this character. The best informed educators in the theory and art of teaching are agreed that the attempt to teach our Federal system before the student has gained a knowledge of local govern ment, and particularly a knowledge of the government and institutions of his own State, is going at the subject from the wrong end. As brief as this part is, it will nevertheless be found to contain much that is not contained in any other work of a similar character, and in language so simple that it may not be misunderstood. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Biennial Report of the Executive Committee: For the Two Years Ending December 31, 1904 The State of Wisconsin gives its Society per year for books and an effort is being made to have this amount increased. While much can be accomplished by donations it is simply impossible to get the books we ought to have without a fund for that purpose. The Wisconsin Society has employed for years one person on the catalog, and part of the time two. Two years ago the University librarian estimated the cost of cataloging the library we then had at If immediate provision is not made to catalog the entire library that part relating to Missouri should be provided for and the amount asked will allow a beginning at this work. Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletins, 1908: Nos. 326-328 Need of investigation - Both the Carboniferous and the Tertiary rocks of Arkansas contain extensive deposits of coal, but only those of the older system in a field situated within the valley of Arkansas River and adjacent to the western boundary of the State, have been exploited and are known to the trade. These coals have always borne a high reputation, but the demand for them has greatly increased in recent years. They grade from bituminous to semi anthracite, and comparative experiments at the Geological Survey's fuel-testing plant have shown that coals of as good quality are not found elsewhere in the United States west of West Virginia.0 New uses for them have been found which indicate their importance in the commercial development of the Middle West. At the same time mining operations within the field have demonstrated that its structure is more complex and the known areas of workable coal more limited than the results of earlier surveys would indicate. For these reasons a number of operators and dealers in Arkansas coal called on the United States Geological Survey for more definite information regarding the extent and geologic structure of these coal beds, and in compliance with this demand a detailed reconnaissance investigation of the field was made from March 1 to August 1, 1906, the results of which are embodied in this report.
