Book Description
Have you ever been on holiday and just wanted to stay? How far would you go for this newfound freedom? For P.I. Toni Mendez, the honeymoon seems over with her long-time best friend — recently turned girlfriend. Needing time to think, she takes on what looks like a straightforward missing person case in a coveted holiday destination. However, she soon realises this case might not be the stroll on a beach she had hoped for. Alice has lived a sheltered, privileged life, controlled and influenced by those around her, until one day, in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, she walks out. Cape Town, South Africa — renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with its white sand beaches, majestic Table Mountain, nearby wine lands, and scenic drives. Behind the shiny tourist veneer, it is a place with a dark underbelly of crime and conflict; a city on the edge, where life is cheap and theft, murder and trafficking are business as usual. *** Winner of 2018 - NYC Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite - World Literature *** *** Winner of 2018 - NYC Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite - LGBTQ+ *** “Compelling, intriguing, fascinating and a terrific read!” “Multi-layered and intelligently plotted...Bravo!” “An utterly absorbing read.” “A gripping novel!” *** Beware of spoilers in the reviews below that are without spoiler alerts. *** Note: This book was previously titled “Project ALICE”. Looking for a gripping, fast-paced, thriller, set in a picturesque tourist haven by day and a dark and gritty underbelly by night — then “Finding ALICE” is for you! Book Description
Sliding into the Rabbit Hole… Would She Ever Return? On the surface, Alice Laxton seems no different from any other college girl: bright, inquisitive, excited about the life ahead of her. But for years, a genetic time bomb has been ticking away. Because of Alice’s near-genius intelligence, teachers and counselors have always made excuses for her “little idiosyncrasies.” But during a stress-filled senior year at college, a new world of voices, visions, and unexplainable “knowledge” causes Alice to begin to lose her grip on reality. As Alice’s schizophrenia progresses, she experiences a disturbing religious “awakening,” believing that God and angels and demons are speaking to her. When others attempt to intervene, Alice is subjected to a wide range of “treatments” even more frightening and painful than her illness. Powerfully raw and brutally honest, Finding Alice is a story of individual suffering and hope, a family’s shared ordeal, and a search for true mental and spiritual healing.

Book Description
Looking For Alice by British photographer Sian Davey tells the story of her young daughter Alice and their family. Alice was born with Down's Syndrome, but is no different to any other little girl or indeed human being. She feels what we all feel. Their family is also like many other families, and Sian's portraits of Alice and their daily life are both intimate and familiar. She states: My family is a microcosm for the dynamics occurring in many other families. Previously as a psychotherapist I have listened to many stories and it is interesting that what has been revealed to me, after fifteen years of practice, is not how different we are to one another, but rather how alike we are as people. It is what we share that is significant. The stories vary but we all experience similar emotions. However despite the normality, the underlying fact is that society does not acknowledge Alice as such, and her very existence was given little or no value. She entered a world where routine genetic screening at twelve weeks gestation is thrust towards birth prevention rather than birth preparation. Indeed, prior to the introduction of screening, children such as Alice would have been severely marginalised and ultimately institutionalised and given little or limited medical care. I was also deeply shocked when Alice was born as an 'imperfect' baby. I was fraught with anxiety that rippled through to every aspect of my relationship with her. My anxieties penetrated my dreams. On reflection I saw that Alice was feeling my rejection of her and that caused me further pain. I saw that the responsibility lay with me; I had to dig deep into my own prejudices and shine a light on them. The result was that as my fear dissolved I fell in love with my daughter. We all did.

Book Description
Wisdom from Pooh Corner, Alice's Looking Glass, and Other Unlikely Places is a book for adults who like to think deep thoughts but still enjoy the stories of their youth. It digs down into some wonderful and well known stories, children's stories, and myths to unearth wisdom lessons buried within them. We mightn't think to look for messages about spiritual friendship in The Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh, about self-confidence in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, or about discouragement in Tolstoy's The Tired Swan, but there they are nevertheless, just waiting for a little imagination on your part. So come along with me and let's take a look. You'll enjoy revisiting these lovely old stories and may just learn a few things along the way, things you hadn't realized were tucked away in there!
