Book Description
Coastal Defences aims to present the broad spectrum of methods that engineers use to protect the coastline and investigates the sorts of issues that can arise as a result. The first section of the book examines 'traditional' hard techniques, such as sea walls and groynes, whilst the second looks at the more recent trend of using techniques more sympathetic to nature. By looking at each of the main methods of coastal protection in detail, the book investigates the rationale for using each method and the consequent management issues, presenting a case for and against each of the techniques.

Book Description
Europe has a long history of managing coastal erosion through a variety of protection strategies, from the defences of the Venice lagoons to coastal land reclamation in the Netherlands. This book provides a comprehensive review of the entire coastline of Europe and a comparative analysis of erosion problems and solutions in each country. Each chapter discusses the natural and anthropogenic factors in the erosion process and in defence projects design and maintenance, including coastal morphology and wave climate, land use changes and use of coastal areas, the evolution of coastal protection, climate change and political and administrative assessments. Particular attention is paid to demographic and economic factors influencing coastal erosion in each country and to technical and administrative criteria influencing defence projects design. Lavishly illustrated in full colour throughout, the book represents a definitive reference work on its subject.

Book Description
Coastal structures are an important component in any coastal protection scheme. They directly control wave and storm surge action or to stabilize a beach which provides protection to the coast. This book provides the most up-to-date technical advances on the design and construction of coastal structures and sea defenses.Written by renowned practicing coastal engineers, this edited volume focuses on the latest technology applied in planning, design and construction, effective engineering methodology, unique projects and problems, design and construction challenges, and other lessons learned. Many books have been written about the theoretical treatment of coastal and ocean structures. Much less has been written about the practical practice aspect of ocean structures and sea defenses. This comprehensive book fills the gap. It is an essential source of reference for professionals and researchers in the areas of coastal, ocean, civil, and geotechnical engineering.

Book Description
"The construction of coastal defences has allowed many people to live and work in safety in areas of the United Kingdom that would otherwise have been lost to the sea. - However, building and maintaining such defences is a difficult and expensive undertaking, with inevitable consequences for the environment. - In rural areas, some existing defences have been abandoned and, given the predicted effects of global warming, this policy may be extended in the future. - "This guide explains how shorelines can be managed in a cost-effective and environmentally acceptable manner, and includes guidance on the design, construction and maintenance of coastal defences."--Jacket.

Book Description
Middlesex Polytechnic Flood Hazard Research Centre is currently researching the benefits of coast protection and sea defence schemes, through a three-year project sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Appendix 1). This project, which started in November 1986, builds both on previous studies by the Centre of the effects of coastal erosion and flood control (Thompson and Parker 1986) and the parallel CIRIA study of sea wall design. Within the first six months of the start of this project at Middlesex Polytechnic we have developed a set of Interim Guidelines for the economic appraisal of the range of coast protection ad sea defence schemes in England and Wales (Thompson et al 1987). These Interim Guidelines have been agreed by Ministry Officials and by a Treasury representative. They are explained briefly in this paper, and copies are available on request from Middlesex Polytechnic.

Excerpt: "Costal defense" redirects here. For military defense of coasts, see Coastal defence and fortification. Oosterscheldekering sea wall, the Netherlands. In some jurisdictions the terms sea defense and coastal protection are used to mean, respectively, defense against flooding and erosion. The term coastal defence is the more traditional term, but coastal management has become more popular as the field has expanded to include techniques that allow erosion to claim land. Coastal engineering, as it relates to harbours, starts with the development of ancient civilizations together with the origin of maritime traffic, perhaps before 3500 B.C. Docks, breakwaters, and other harbour works were built by hand and often in a grand scale. Basic source of modern literature on coastal engineering is the "European Code of Conduct for Coastal Zones" issued by the European Council in 1999. This document was prepared by the Group of Specialists on Coastal Protection and should be used 'as a source of inspiration for national legislation and practice' by decision makers. The Group of Specialists on Coastal Protection (PE-S-CO), set up in 1995, pursuant to a decision by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, met for the...
