Book Description
Introduced in the United States as a new material for statuary in the mid-nineteenth century, zinc has properties that allowed replication at low cost. It was used to produce modestly priced serial sculpture displayed throughout the nation on fountains, public monuments, and war memorials. Imitative finishes created the illusion of more costly bronze, stone, or polychrome wood. This first comprehensive overview of American zinc sculpture is interdisciplinary, engaging aspects of art history, popular culture, local history, technology, and art conservation. Included is a generously illustrated catalogue presenting more than eight hundred statues organized by type: trade figures and Indians, gods and goddesses, fountain figures, animals, famous men, military figures, firemen, cemetery memorials, and religous subjects. The compilation of data on these statues will be valuable to scholars, filling the current void in research libraries. The author's experience as a conservator will also make the an essential resource for historic preservationists seeking to repair statues now damaged by years of outdoor exposure. This book has 555 illustrations, 354 of which are in color. Carol Grissom is Senior Objects Conservator at the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute.

Book Description
A wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational dive into art history as you've never seen it before, from the host of the beloved ArtCurious podcast We're all familiar with the works of Claude Monet, thanks in no small part to the ubiquitous reproductions of his water lilies on umbrellas, handbags, scarves, and dorm-room posters. But did you also know that Monet and his cohort were trailblazing rebels whose works were originally deemed unbelievably ugly and vulgar? And while you probably know the tale of Vincent van Gogh's suicide, you may not be aware that there's pretty compelling evidence that the artist didn't die by his own hand but was accidentally killed--or even murdered. Or how about the fact that one of Andy Warhol's most enduring legacies involves Caroline Kennedy's moldy birthday cake and a collection of toenail clippings? ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history, revealing some of the strangest, funniest, and most fascinating stories behind the world's great artists and masterpieces. Through these and other incredible, weird, and wonderful tales, ArtCurious presents an engaging look at why art history is, and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.

Book Description
Gabe Gabel has written the book she wishes she had been able to find when she started her professional career thirty years ago. It is really a two part book. One part concentrates on the bronze sculpture. Art collectors will find the step by step explanation of the casting process extremely educational. Artists who wish to learn more about doing a bronze sculpture will not only like that part, but the complete how-to-do-it discussion will cover everything they need to know about taking a sculpture all the way through. It starts with the placement of the armature and finishes with the decision of the number of the limited edition they choose to cast. The information is all there, the basic tools, the different choices they have in methods and materials, and why Gabe prefers the ones she does. There are sources, and expenses, and many ways to save money that she has learned over the years. Many options are discussed, there are suggestions for solving problems that can occur, and attention is paid to safety concerns that artists face that are rarely mentioned. Nearly any bronze sculptor is likely to learn some tips that they will appreciate, no matter how experienced they are. Dont look for how to create your art. The reader has to bring his or her own artistic ability to the sculpture table. This is not the book to show you how to do a horse sculpture, though the book does follow one horse original from armature to bronze. This is a book to show you how to bring your own creations to casting ready sculpture. But if you do want to sculpt a horse, you will come out with some great ideas to make yours even better. For artists who use other media, there is a great deal of wonderful information on all aspects of marketing and managing your art business. It is a business, and Gabe feels that is must be treated as such if an artist wants to make a profit and to make a living selling their work. It is all there, how to start and utilize a mailing list; there is a discussion on show vehicles and various art displays, (with information on building your own,) show clothing and manners, types of shows, galleries, your home office and computer. Look for letters to Dear Aunt Gabby and her often rather pointed advice. Aunt Gabby has heard it all, from artists and buyers to show promoters. Aunt Gabby is not an art critic,( she thinks there are enough of those), but she can be highly critical of artists and their behaviors. In short, this is a book by an artist for artists, though Gabe does hope that art collectors will find it irresistible, too. Please visit her personal web site, gabegabel.com to enjoy her work in full color, see her show schedule, and read her newsletters. She also welcomes comments through e-mail at [email protected]

Book Description
Andrea del Verrocchio was the preeminent sculptor in late fifteenth-century Florence and one of the leading artists in Renaissance Europe. In every genre of statuary, Verrocchio made formal and conceptual contributions of the greatest significance, and many of his sculptures, such as the Christ and St. Thomas and the Colleoni Monument, are among the masterpieces of Renaissance art. A favorite artist of Lorenzo de' Medici and the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci, Verrocchio was a key link between the innovations of the fifteenth century and the creations of the High Renaissance. This beautiful catalogue raisonné is the first comprehensive and detailed study of Verrocchio's extraordinary and innovative sculptures. Andrew Butterfield has combined careful visual analysis of the sculptures with groundbreaking research into their function, iconography, and historical context. In order to explain Verrocchio's contributions to the different genres of Renaissance sculpture, Butterfield provides new and important information on a broad range of issues such as the typology and social history of Florentine tombs, the theoretical problems in the production of perspectival reliefs, and the origins of the Figura serpentinata. Furthermore, Butterfield draws on a spectrum of often overlooked texts to elucidate fundamental iconographical problems, for example, the significance of David in quattrocento Florence. In its scope, depth, and clarity, The Sculptures of Andrea del Verrocchio will rank as one of the finest studies of an Italian sculptor ever published.
