Accurate descriptions of every historic edifice in the ancient realm can be found, and historical sketches are not lacking. But the material at hand dealing with this subject exists only in a form too bulky for general use. The pamphlets, on the other hand, which are to be had at the site of many of these ruins, are often too superficial and sometimes incorrect and not suited to the purpose of more deeply interested persons, while both classes have ignored the romantic interest which centres about these places from the roles they play in the poetry and fiction for which Scotland has long been so famous.
