My book has been accepted for publish by Stonewall Press, PA. Describes how growing up and playing tennis with the daughters of my mom’s tea circle of friends. The daughters gave me the mind and strength to travel alone to Europe I discovered that my silky long straight black hair worn down the front of my white silk, shirt black skirt straight just above knees, black jacket and then shoes were three inch heels sling pumps click as I walked on tiles and at the Louvre Museum in Paris one male followed me out and stopped me to invite me out to dinner. In Greece one male offered to pay for lodging in tourist hotel. He kept looking at my hair. I had to get the conceirge to get me a taxi to leave and get to the train station - I purchased a Eurail Pass cost $100 American bills - you can get off anywhere in Europe and get back on anywhere. That was when I took advantage to walk the small villages and markets.

Spent behind the Wheel
Author: Julietta Hua
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 1452966435
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
Exploring professional passenger driving and the gig economy through feminist theories of labor Are taxi drivers in today’s era of the ride-hail app performing care work akin to domestic and household labor? So argue the authors of Spent behind the Wheel. Bringing together sociological and legal perspectives with feminist theoretical insights, Julietta Hua and Kasturi Ray examine the case study of contemporary professional passenger driving in the United States. On the one hand, they show, the rise of the gig economy has brought new attention to the industry of professional passenger driving. On the other hand, the vulnerabilities that professional drivers experience remain hidden. Drawing on interviews with drivers, labor organizers, and members of licensing commissions, as well as case law and other published resources, Hua and Ray argue that working for ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft shares similarities with driving for taxi companies in the impact on driver lives. Lyft and Uber sell the idea of industry disruption, but in fact they entrench long-standing modes of extracting the reproductive labor of their drivers for the benefit of consumer lives. Reproductive labor—conventionally understood as feminized labor—is extracted, but masked, behind the masculinized, racialized bodies of drivers. Professional driving is thus best understood alongside domestic and other gendered service work as reproductive labors devalued and often demonetized to benefit the national economy. Spent behind the Wheel is a must for readers interested in critical studies of technological change and the gig economy, showing how drivers’ capacities are drained for the benefit of riders, corporations, and the maintenance of the racial state.

Advances in Clinical Child Psychology
Author: Benjamin Lahey
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461398266
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 371
Book Description
Advances in Clinical Child Psychology is a serial publication designed to bring together original summaries of the most important new develop ments in the field of clinical psychology and its related disciplines. Each chapter is written by a key figure in an innovative area of research or by an individual who is particularly well qualified to comment on a topic of major contemporary importance. These chapters provide convenient, concise explorations of empirical and clinical advances in the fields of clinical child psychology, child psychiatry, and related disciplines. The chapter topics are chosen by the editors and are based on sug gestions by the advisory editors, unsolicited suggestions provided by colleagues, and all of our reading of the latest published empirical and theoretical works. They reflect our collective perception of the leading trends in the field of clinical child psychology. The contents of Volume 10 reflect multiple themes. Two chapters focus on different aspects of the child's family: the home and family environment associated with childhood psychopathology and the characteristics of parents whose parenting has become twisted into the abuse or neglect of their own children. The key topics of aggression and stealing are dealt with in two chapters, and five chapters deal with the variety of topics that were formerly under the umbrella concept of minimal brain dysfunction.

The End of October
Author: Lawrence Wright
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0593081145
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 401
Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower—a riveting thriller and “all-too-convincing chronicle of science, espionage, action and speculation” (The Wall Street Journal). At an internment camp in Indonesia, forty-seven people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever. When epidemiologist Henry Parsons travels there on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate, what he finds will have staggering repercussions. Halfway across the globe, the deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security scrambles to mount a response to the rapidly spreading pandemic leapfrogging around the world, which she believes may be the result of an act of biowarfare. And a rogue experimenter in man-made diseases is preparing his own terrifying solution. As already-fraying global relations begin to snap, the virus slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions and decimating the population. With his own wife and children facing diminishing odds of survival, Henry travels from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia to his home base at the CDC in Atlanta, searching for a cure and for the origins of this seemingly unknowable disease. The End of October is a one-of-a-kind thriller steeped in real-life political and scientific implications, filled with the insight that has been the hallmark of Wright’s acclaimed nonfiction and the full-tilt narrative suspense that only the best fiction can offer.
