Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xxiv. scientific meliorism. "Meliorism implies the improvement of the social condition through cold calculation, through the adoption of indirect means. It is not content merely to alleviate present suffering, it aims to create conditions under which no suffering can exist."--Lester F. Ward. "Man has already furthered evolution very considerably, half unconsciously, and for his own personal advantages, but he has not yet risen to the conviction that it is his religious duty to do so deliberately and systematically."--Francis Galton. General happiness cannot co-exist with the evils of our present social state. These evils are poverty, a lifelong struggle for existence, the birth and survival of individuals weak and unfit, disease, premature death, enforced celibacy, late marriage, drunkenness, disorganization of family life, severity and harshness in training children, widespread prostitution, war, competition causing survival of militant instincts, social injustice, inequality of comforts and luxuries, tyranny, crime, barbarous treatment of criminals, disrespect of natural function and consequent injury to health, conventional folly, social repression of innocent enjoyment, subjection of women, legal restraint of exuberant life, social and religious bigotry, the feebleness of religious guidance and confusion of religious thought. Partial views of man and his social life have hitherto prevailed and given birth to specifics of all kinds for the cure of the diseases of society; and these, in the growing tenderness of Humanity, have been eagerly adopted and promptly applied, to prove, not only fruitless of good effect, but in many cases fruitful of bad and disastrous effects. Scientific Meliorism deals with society as a whole and...

Book Description
The brief presents a model for happiness based on current knowledge in evolutionary biology and neurobiology. Briefly, the primary purpose of nervous systems is to direct an animal toward behaviour relevant for survival and procreation. In primitive animals actions are based on reflexes, while in humans the modules directing behaviour engage positive and negative affect (good and bad feelings), and they are swayed by cognitive processes. The reason why evolution opted for this strategy was the improved flexibility in response – i.e., we learn from previous experiences. The human capacity for happiness is an accidental consequence. An array of brain modules has evolved to care for various pursuits, but recent studies suggest that they converge on shared neural circuits designed to generate positive and negative mood. Happiness can be construed as the net output of the relevant modules. The briefs suggests a strategy for how to avoid having negative feelings (such as anxiety, depression and chronic pain) dominate the mind, and how to exercise positive feelings. In short, the book offers both a deeper understanding of what happiness is about, and a framework for improving well-being. Book Description
Global Secularisms addresses the state of and prospects for secularism globally. Drawing from multiple fields, it brings together theoretical discussion and empirical case studies that illustrate "on-the-ground," extant secularisms as they interact with various religious, political, social, and economic contexts. Its point of departure is the fact that secularism is plural and that various secularisms have developed in various contexts and from various traditions around the world. Secularism takes on different social meanings and political valences wherever it is expressed. The essays collected here provide numerous points of contact between empirical case studies and theoretical reflection. This multiplicity informs and challenges the conceptual theorization of secularism as a universal doctrine. Analyses of different regions enrich our understanding of the meanings of secularism, providing comparative range to our notions of secularity. Theoretical treatments help to inform our understanding of secularism in context, enabling readers to discern what is at stake in the various regional expressions of secularity globally. While the bulk of the essays are case-based research, the current thinking of leading theorists and scholars is also included.
