The research findings answer the question, "Does school attendance relate to student achievement as perceived on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test scores?" The research was conducting by doing a correlation analysis on the students' school attendance percentage for the 2012-2013 school year and their 2013 Communication Arts MAP test scores and their 2013 Math MAP test scores. The results of this study show that there is a positive relationship between school attendance percentages and student achievement based on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test. The conclusion based on this research is that school attendance has a significant effect on student achievement. Therefore, school districts should further educate their parents and community on the importance of regular attendance. There should also be a better form of tracking chronically absent students and providing support of them."

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between student attendance and student achievement on standardized tests. The study group was ninety- two students of a seventh grade class in an urban school district. A study was conducted to analyze if there is a direct relationship between a student's attendance and achievement on standardized tests. Individual attendance percentages and test scores from the 2014 MAP Communication Arts and Mathematics were collected for each student for the 2012-2013 academic year. Using A Statistic Package (ASP), data was entered into the system to test the correlation between student attendance and student achievement. The analysis resulted in a significant, positive relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Mathematics test. However, the analysis depicted no significant relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Communication Arts test. Based on the results, schools should increase the communication with parents about the importance of attendance and student achievement in education.

Poor attendance is an attribute of the at-risk student and jeopardizes their academic success. Research links truancy and dropout to deviant behavior which can include drug use, earlier sexual activity, and criminal behavior. School systems seeking intervention methods to disrupt this cycle should employ what the research states as a holistic approach to improving attendance in at-risk students. A holistic approach includes having high-interest after school programming that has the potential for long term mentoring opportunities, parental involvement, and community participation. Students who attend preschool regularly are significantly more likely than chronically absent preschoolers, those who missed at least 10 percent of the school year, to be ready for kindergarten and to attend school regularly in later grades. The study, which followed 25,000 three- and four-year-olds served by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) school-based preschool programs, finds chronic absenteeism is rampant among preschoolers in Chicago. In 2011-2012, almost half of three-year-olds and more than one-third of four-year-olds were chronically absent. This report examines the extent of preschool absenteeism and the reasons preschool students are absent. It also examines the relationship between preschool absences and students' scores on measures of kindergarten readiness in math, letter recognition, and social-emotional development, as well as assessments of second-grade reading fluency. Ultimately, students who miss more preschool have lower kindergarten readiness scores, and students who are chronically absent in preschool are more likely to be chronically absent in kindergarten and have lower second grade reading scores. However, students who enter preschool with the weakest skills benefit the most from regular attendance.
