Book Description
Annotation The purpose of the October 1994 conference was to attract researchers in the area of parallel libraries for distributed memory machines as well as related technologies. The particular emphasis was on MPI, the new Message Passing Interface standard. Among the topics: the Parallel Utilities Library; scalable libraries for solving systems of nonlinear equations and unconstrained minimization problems; performance evaluation of some MPI implementations on workstation clusters; and parallelizing a reservoir simulator using MPI. No index. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book Description
This research project consisted of a number of closely related topics involving researchers at several institutions. The research is leading to important new software tools and standards, using primarily, the software packages ScaLAPACK and P_ARPACK. ScaLAPACK, developed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of California at Berkeley, is a prototype library of software for performing dense and band linear algebra computations on message-passing computers. P_ARPACK developed at Rice University, is a distributed-memory software package for solving large, sparse, nonsymmetrical eigenproblems using a variant of the implicitly restarted arnold method. Recognizing that a message passing standard was necessary to ensure the easy portability of the prototype libraries, the project initiated and promoted the development of the MPI message passing interface, as well as the HPF standard. Standards specific to parallel linear algebra are also being developed.

Book Description
This report details the main technical results of the research project 'A scalable parallel library for numerical linear algebra, ' and constitutes the final report for this project. The research led to the development of a substantial body of software, both in the area of parallel linear algebra, and in infrastructure for building parallel libraries. The main parallel software libraries produced were ScaLAPACK for dense linear algebra, ARPACK for large-scale eigenproblems, and CAPSS for solving sparse linear systems. The project also played a central role in initiating and supporting the creation of the MPT message passing interface. In addition, the project has promoted the use of software templates as building blocks for iterative methods, and project personnel have co-authored a book on this subject.

Book Description
The primary objective of this project has been to develop a new programming language, compiler and programming environment, called pC++, that is based on a simple extension to C++ to support the development of software for Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) computer systems. This tool supports a platform for parallel object oriented software capable of running without modification on all commercial Multiple Instruction Multiple Data (MIMD) systems; (1) an interface to Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) libraries such as ScaLapack++, A++ and POOMA; (2) an interface to High Performance Fortran (HPF); (3) an interface to control parallel C++ based languages such as CC++; (4) a way to exploit parallel I/O systems and persistent object databases; and (5) a complete programming environment. pC++ has been implemented on a wide range of commercially available parallel systems including the Thinking Machines CM-5, the Intel Paragon, the SGI PowerChallenge, the IBM SP-2 and the Cray T3-D. One of the most interesting by products of the pC++ project has been a language preprocessor toolkit called Sage++. This toolkit has been extended in a variety of ways and is used for a large number of applications, including the TAU programming environment. There have been four major components to C++ technology. The first component is the pC++ language. The mot important of these are applications that are part of the NSF NCSA Alliance. The second component of technology is the Sage++ compiler toolkit that was built for pC++. The third component of technology transfer is the Tulip runtime system, the ASCI Blue Mountain system. The fourth component of the technology is the TAU programming environment tools and will be the standard foundation for HPC++ tools.
