Book Description
The fundamental aspect of the Internet architecture that distinguishes it from other network technologies (such as X. 25 and ATM) is that it is c- nectionless (vs. connection-oriented) and stateless (vs. stateful). The heated debateofwhetherconnection-orientedorconnectionlessarchitectureisbetter has lasted for several decades. Proponents of the connectionless architecture point out the great robustness and scalability properties of the architecture, as demonstratedby the Internet. Onewell-knownarticulationofthis philo- phy is the "End-to-End Arguments". Opponents argue, rightfully, that there is no known solution that can provide quantitative performance assurances or guaranteed QoS in a connectionless network. It has been widely rec- nized that QoS is a must-have feature as the Internet technology evolves to the next stage. However, all existing solutions that provide guaranteed QoS require routers to maintain per?ow (another name for connection used by the Internet community) state, which is the fundamental element of a connection-oriented architecture. The apparent con?icting goals of having a stateless network and supporting QoS have presented a great dilemma for Internet architects. As an example, Dave Clark, one of the most respected Internet architects and the author of the famous "End-to-End Arguments" paper, wasalsoakeydesigneroftheInternetIntegratedServicesArchitecture that requires routers to maintain per?ow state. Dr. Ion Stoica's dissertation addresses this most pressing and di?cult problem facing the Internet community today: how to enhance the Internet to support rich functionalities (such as QoS and tra?c management) while still maintaining the scalability and robustness properties embodied in the original Internet architecture. Book Description
This volume aims to document the authors' prescription for the architecture, the way the component services are fitted together to provide collaborative tools for video, audio and shared workspaces. The authors have decided to take a new approach to the field by using a prescriptive rather than descriptive style. The text is aimed at technical readers such as developers, undergraduate or postgraduate (MSc) courses on multimedia and networking, and professionals. The subjects covered include the network requirements, the media encoding techniques including basic compression techniques, the protocols (rtp/rtcp, rsvp etc.), the distributed algorithms for synchronization, reliability, security and so on.

Book Description
The 1999 International Workshop on Interactive Distributed Multimedia Sys tems and Telecommunication Services (IDMS) in Toulouse is the sixth in a se ries that started in 1992. The previous workshops were held in Stuttgart in 1992, Hamburg in 1994, Berlin in 1996, Darmstadt in 1997, and Oslo in 1998. The area of interest of IDMS ranges from basic system technologies, such as networking and operating system support, to all kinds of teleservices and distributed multimedia applications. Technical solutions for telecommunications and distributed multimedia systems are merging and quality-of-service (QoS) will play a key role in both areas. However, the range from basic system tech nologies to distributed mutlimedia applications and teleservices is still very broad and we have to understand the implications of multimedia applications and their requirements for middleware and networks. We are challenged to develop new and more fitting solutions for all distributed multimedia systems and telecom munication services to meet the requirements of the future information society.

Book Description
Telecommunications Network Design And Management represents the state-of-the-art of applying operations research techniques and solutions across a broad spectrum of telecommunications problems and implementation issues. -The first three chapters of the book deal with the design of wireless networks, including UMTS and Ad-Hoc networks. -Chapters 4-6 deal with the optimal design of telecommunications networks. Techniques used for network design range from genetic algorithms to combinatorial optimization heuristics. -Chapters 7-10 analyze traffic flow in telecommunications networks, focusing on optimizing traffic load distribution and the scheduling of switches under multi-media streams and heavy traffic. -Chapters 11-14 deal with telecommunications network management, examining bandwidth provisioning, admission control, queue management, dynamic routing, and feedback regulation in order to ensure that the network performance is optimized. -Chapters 15-16 deal with the construction of topologies and allocation of bandwidth to ensure quality-of-service.

Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on the Management of Multimedia Networks and Services, MMNS 2003, held in Belfast, Northern Ireland in September 2003. The 39 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on stream control and management, management and control of multicast communications, ad-hoc and sensor networks, QoS and mobility management in wireless networks, traffic engineering and routing, differentiated network services, on-demand networking issues and policies, multimedia QoS management, security management, and (corresponding to an associated workshop) end-to-end monitoring techniques and services.

Book Description
Internet Protocol (IP) networks have, for a number of years, provided the basis for modern communication channels. However, the control and management of these networks needs to be extended so that the required Quality of Service can be achieved. Information about new generations of IP networks is given, covering the future of pervasive networks (that is, networks that arealways present), Wi-Fi, the control of mobility and improved Quality of Service, sensor networks, inter-vehicle communication and optical networks.

Book Description
The liberalisation in the telecommunication market and thus the advent of competition has had a tremendous impact on business in this area. New operators have started to offer telecommunication services in competition with the classical national network operators. This in turn will have an impact on the market share, the tariff structure, the Quality of Service (QoS) and the services offered to the end customers. A way to maintain or increase revenue for network operators is to additionally offer new services to the customers. The final target is a so-called "Full Service Network (FSN)", which is capable of offering all types of bi-directional multimedia services. The provisioning of new telecommunication services in general and new multimedia services in particular is made possible by the availability of several new technologies as well as through advances in standardisation. R&D policies world-wide but especially in Europe have forced the development of new networking technologies such as ATM, xDSL and HFC as well as new video technologies as defined by DVB and DAVIC.

Book Description
Since the publication of Wireless Video Communications five years ago, the area of video compression and wireless transceivers has evolved even further. This new edition addresses a range of recent developments in these areas, giving cognizance to the associated transmission aspects and issues of error resilience. Video Compression and Communications has been updated and condensed yet remains all-encompassing, giving a comprehensive overview of the subject. Covering compression issues, coding delay, implementational complexity and bitrate, the book also looks at the historical perspective to video communication. New edition of successful and informative text, Wireless Video Communications Substantial new material has been added on areas such as H.264, MPEG4 coding and transceivers Clear presentation and broad scope make it essential for anyone interested in wireless communications Systematically converts the lessons of Shannon's information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems. This book is ideal for postgraduates and researchers in communication systems but will also be a valuable reference to undergraduates, development and systems engineers of video compression applications as well as industrialists, managers and visual communications practitioners.
