Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Saarland University, language: English, abstract: In this paper I will deal with the topic of “Scaffolding in the EFL classroom.” Scaffolding plays a crucial role in the classroom and can help to contribute to good teaching. Nevertheless, most teachers are neither aware of the huge benefits of scaffolded instruction, nor do they know anything about the concept of “scaffolding” or the strategies related to it. Even if they sometimes happen to make use of scaffolding strategies, they also often miss the opportunity to apply them when it might have been appropriate to do so. Hence, the aim of this paper is to provide theoretical as well as practical information on scaffolding and to show that and how it is used in class.

Book Description
"Schools are not intentionally equitable places for English learners to achieve, but they could be if the right system of support were put in place. Diane Staehr Fenner and Sydney Snyder recommend just such a system. Not only does it have significant potential for providing fuller access to the core curriculum, it also provides a path for teachers to travel as they navigate the individual needs of students and support their learning journeys." --Douglas Fisher, Coauthor of Visible Learning for Literacy A once-in-a-generation text for assisting a new generation of students Content teachers and ESOL teachers, take special note: if you're looking for a single resource to help your English learners meet the same challenging content standards as their English-proficient peers, your search is complete. Just dip into this toolbox of strategies, examples, templates, and activities from EL authorities Diane Staehr Fenner and Sydney Snyder. The best part? Unlocking English Learners' Potential supports teachers across all levels of experience. The question is not if English learners can succeed in today's more rigorous classrooms, but how. Unlocking English Learners' Potential is all about the how: How to scaffold ELs' instruction across content and grade levels How to promote ELs' oral language development and academic language How to help ELs analyze text through close reading and text-dependent questions How to build ELs' background knowledge How to design and use formative assessment with ELs Along the way, you'll build the collaboration, advocacy, and leadership skills that we all need if we're to fully support our English learners. After all, any one of us with at least one student acquiring English is now a teacher of ELs.

Book Description
The aim of this paper is two-fold: (a) to investigate scaffolding strategies employed by two EFL teachers in the process of instructing more and less proficient learners, and (b) to explore the most effective strategies used by teachers with students. Two elementary school English teachers were invited to take part in this study. Both were asked to select four students, two for each pair of more and less proficient learners, plus three reading texts, one for four students and one each catering to more and less proficient learners' level. Each student took the comprehension test before and after the instruction. After instructions, each student was interviewed by the teacher in a semi-structured format. Both kinds of data were video- and audiotape recorded and transcribed verbatim by two research assistants. Teacher's instructional turns were first highlighted and relevant turns grouped together as episodes. Relevant episodes were then grouped together as a discussion theme. Four themes--offering explanation, clarifying and verifying student understanding, linking with student background knowledge, and negotiating meaning--were generated for discussion. Oral interview data yielded the most effective scaffolding strategies used by teachers with students. Pedagogical implications are suggested for class use. Interview questions and transcription key are appended. (Contains 5 tables.).

Book Description
Writing is a recursive skill that draws on various sub-skills and processes: knowledge of vocabulary and punctuation, handwriting, spelling, and mastery of word usage and grammar. Many foreign language students encounter various difficulties when they are writing in the second language. They often struggle to transform their thought into words and put them on paper. Scaffolding strategies are effective tools for helping learners overcome their writing difficulties. Scaffolding is an interactive process in which a teacher or facilitator assists a learner to build a structure to contain and frame the new information. This book introduces a suggested program based on scaffolding strategies (graphic organizers, writing frames, and think sheets) to develop the writing skill of EFL students.
