In this study, hardwood sawing technology was identified in five tropical countries: Ghana, Brazil, Venezuela, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The density of wood and presence of silica make it a challenge to saw many tropical hardwoods. The bandsaw is the most commonly used machine and is employed in many sizes and configurations. Sawblade parameters and operating procedures vary according to the nature of the species being sawn and are influenced as much by local custom as technical knowledge of the process. The most commonly reported problems include poor saw maintenance, lack of trained personnel, obsolete equipment, and inadequate sawtooth geometry and wear resistance. Some problems can be addressed by technology transfer, others must be addressed by research.

In recent years wood strength researchers have begun to replace experimental unit allocation via random sampling with allocation via sorts based on nondestructive measurements of strength predictors such as modulus of elasticity and specific gravity. Although this procedure has the potential of greatly increasing experimental sensitivity, as currently implemented it can easily reduce sensitivity. In this paper we discuss the problem and we present solutions. Given the existence of nondestructive measurements of strength predictors, our methods can be used to reduce sample sizes. We have written a public domain computer program that implements the methods.

Franz is an Associate Professor of Wood Technology in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan. The wood-cutting process is defined in terms of the interactions between wood properties, cutting geometry, and the friction between the chip and the tool. In continuous observations, three basic types of chip were identified--each having generated a related quality of surface. In the analysis of the mechanics of chip formation, the book describes the determination of machining efficiency and surface quality; by demonstrated calculations of optimum cutting angles for given wood properties, an equation is derived for the control of surface quality in wood-cutting.
