Book Description
This study is an attempt to analyse some aspects of Sanskrit syntax within the framework of Fillmore's case grammar. It contains seven chapters including the Introduction and conclusions. In the first chapter the theoretical assumptions of FCG (Fillmore's Case Grammar) are mentioned. Besides this, there is a brief reference to the views of grammarians and linguists about the Sanskrit language, followed by a specification of the scope of this study. In the second chapter, the case-categories A/D/R/O/F/I/L/ SO/GO/Ext/Pa, along with their semantic and syntactic correlates and related problems, are discussed. In the third chapter NP-asti-NP sentences (i. e. those containing the copula) are considered and the case-categories that may occur therein, are specified. In addition, such NP-asti-NP sentences which are complex structures and involve the process of nominalisation, are described. In the fourth chapter Genitive constructions (i. e. those which show the genitive inflexion) are taken up. Inalienable and alienable relationships in such constructions along with the process of Nominalisation are discussed. In the fifth chapter coordination, both derived and phrasal, is considered. The latter as related to comitative constructions, is discussed in detail and the status of the Comitative case (as proposed by Fillmore) is examined. In the sixth chapter, a discussion of the lexicon as presented in FCG is given. It also includes a list of lexical entries for verbs, phrase structure rules and a selection of important transformational rules. The seventh chapter sums up the points that have arisen in the discussion of the foregoing chapters. Finally, a short bibliography is appended.

Book Description
This volume contains 10 articles based on papers presented at the Linguistics sessions of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference (Edinburgh, July 2006) and shows the engagement of scholars with all aspects of Vedic Grammar, including phonology, inflectional and derivational morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicography, and stylistics. In many cases the articles constitute integral parts of long-term research projects of their authors that are ongoing even at this date of publication and therefore present the broad sweep of the field of Vedic linguistics as it is currently being practiced. The contributions include two on phonology (Kobayashi and Kummel), two on morphology (Garcia Ramon and Tucker), three on syntax (Bubenik, Hettrich, and Hock), one on the semantics of tense and aspect (Dahl), one on lexicography (Krisch), and one on stylistics (Klein). In several instances these papers fit integrally into the research agendas of their authors, representing parts of larger projects reflected in recent publications (Bubenik, Dahl, Garcia Ramon, Hettrich, Klein, Kobayashi) or deal with issues touched on repeatedly by their authors over a number of years (Hock). In one case (Krisch), the work announced has in the interim begun to appear and represent a broad reflection of research projects currently underway in Sanskrit Linguistics. That all but one of the papers focus exclusively on Vedic is simply a reflection of the reality that in Western countries the study of Sanskrit has frequently been treated as an entree to Indo-European linguistics, and it is especially the oldest texts that have been mined for whatever nuggets they can yield relative to our understanding of the proto-language. Book Description
This monograph owes its existence to certain puzzles in universal grammar and the theory of language which led the author to an investigation of word order in Sanskrit and its possible analyses and descriptions. Not unexpectedly, the raw material was found to be too vast for a first-hand treatment even to be attempted. Rather surprisingly, however, its inter pretations by Indian and Western theorists and grammarians turned out to be so greatly at variance, that an analysis of these interpretations seemed rewarding. Accordingly, theoretical issues within the framework of generative grammar had to be faced anew, and alternative solutions suggested them selves. In this connexion the Sanskrit grammarians proved not only in spiring but positively helpful. This book may invite the accusation that it wilfully mixes disciplines. There were alternatives: one could try to write a history of the subject; or construct a merely formal edifice, leaving it to others to test its adequacy; or else one could make the notorious attempt to stick to the facts, which is not only unilluminating but also bound to fail. Any such self-imposed restrictions seemed to conflict with the original intent. And so it was decided not only to make available the results of the investigation into Sanskrit word order, but also to introduce a theory of universal grammar to account for these and other results.
