Book Description
Excerpt from Public Sanitation and Other Papers During the period of our Civil War the world was appalled at the hideous loss of life. During the four years of war the Federal army lost by those directly killed in battle, men. It is probable that the loss on the Southern side was equal to this and possibly greater, but if this were true, even if this enormous number had to be doubled, it would still be less than the number of children under two years of age who are reported to have died in the four years between 1903 and 1907, for during that period there were reported the deaths of children under two years. Book Description
Excerpt from Military Hygiene and Sanitation This short treatise on Military Hygiene and Sanitation is founded on the lectures delivered by me while Professor of Hygiene at the Royal Army Medical College. I have not attempted to deal in detail with all the problems of hygiene, and in particular I have omitted - as, for instance, in the question of house drainage - those which are liberally treated in the ordinary textbooks. In considering the prevention of infectious diseases, also, I have limited myself to those which are most important in war. I have not therefore discussed such ailments as Malta fever and Tuberculosis, for instance, with, which the army is concerned mainly in peace-time, under conditions not differing materially from those which confront the Medical Officer of Health in civil practice. I have to acknowledge much kind assistance from Captain N. Dunbar Walker, Royal Army Medical Corps, who has helped me greatly with suggestions and in the preparation of some of the plates. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Military Hygiene and Sanitation In the discussion of Alcohol and other Narcotics, the aim has been to enable pupils to form an intelligent opinion upon the whole subject and especially to distinguish between mere assertion and scientific evidence. While certain of the data in this chapter cannot be accepted as wholly proved, they yet represent the views of the ablest investigators everywhere. With a clear comprehension of the matter, each one may then determine for himself what his personal relations with these substances shall be. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Military Sanitation and Management of the Sanitary Service It is quite evident to you, as common sense teaches, that it is desirable to have men accepted in the Army who are the best physical specimens, and also men somewhat intelligent and mentally alert. In a small army when men desire to enlist in great numbers this selection can be made; but there are so many men who have slight imperfections that this degree of perfection will never be reached when a great number of men are called out for active ser vice. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sanitation of Recreation Camps and Parks "Nothing is so acceptable to the camper-out as a pure article in the way of woods and waters. Any admixture of human relics mars the spirit of the scene." John Burroughs. "Bits of paper - newspaper at that - banana- and orange-peel, pie-crusts, any loathsome scraps of wasted food, we leave, without a thought, in the heart of the woods; or defile with them, the clearest lake or stream. And this at a time of year when the radiant purity of nature is at its height, when the mere sight of a bank of lady-fern ought to send us to our knees in reverence." Rosalind Richards.
