Book Description
Prince Edward Island National Park is a narrow coastal strip on the Island's north shore, established in 1937 as a recreational seaside park. The purpose of the Park within Parks Canada's representative system plan is to protect an example of the Maritime Plain natural region, in particular the coastal barrier beaches and dune systems. The agency's ability to protect the Park's resources is being inhibited by the popularity of the beaches as recreational destinations, and the cumulative impact of visitor pressure, Park developments, and Park practices threatens the sustainability of the Park ecosystem. This study addresses the concern over cumulative environmental impacts in the Park and includes an introduction on cumulative effects assessment, an extensive literature review, and assessment of cumulative effects of previous, current, and proposed developments in the Park. The significance of the impacts on key resources is discussed and mitigation measures are suggested with regard to natural habitat, aquatic systems, flora, and fauna. Recommendations are made for preserving park habitat and establishing monitoring programs.

Book Description
This new edition - now with Nancy Jackson as a co-author - continues the themes of the first edition: the need to restore the biodiversity, ecosystem health, and ecosystem services provided by coastal landforms and habitats, especially in the light of climate change. The second edition reports on progress made on practices identified in the first edition, presents additional case studies, and addresses new and emerging issues. It analyzes the tradeoffs involved in restoring beaches and dunes - especially on developed coasts - the most effective approaches to use, and how stakeholders can play an active role. The concept of restoration is broad, and includes physical, ecological, economic, social, and ethical principles and ideals. The book will be valuable for coastal scientists, engineers, planners, and managers, as well as shorefront residents. It will also serve as a useful supplementary reference textbook in courses dealing with issues of coastal management and ecology.

Book Description
This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.

Book Description
Spatial Variability in Environmental Science - Patterns, Processes, and Analyses includes eight studies that examine the issue of spatial variability in four areas of the environmental sciences – atmospheric science, geological science, biological science, and landscape science. The topics range from monitoring of wind, the urban heat island, and atmospheric pollution, to coastal geomorphology, landscape planning and forest ecology, the problem of introduced species to regional ecologies, and a technique to improve the identification of human constructions in semi-natural landscapes. A small volume can only offer a small glimpse at the activities of scientists and insights into environmental science, but the array of papers herein offers a unique view of the current scholarship.
