This collection contains vol. 1, no. 4 of the "Pine Tree State" manuscript newspaper, edited and published by 14-year-old Samuel B. Neal on December 23, 1856 at Kittery, York County, Me. The motto "united we stand, divided we fall" is included under the title. It includes articles about the politics and results of the presidential campaign of John C. Fremont during 1856, a description of the city of London at the time, and about the evils of fighting. There is also a poem about the state of Maine and Fremont's campaign, jokes and puzzles, local advertisements including a summary of the newspaper and about the sale of copies of "Life of W.L. Dayton" by James Brooks and the office of the editor, and correspondence to the editor. The named contributors include C.C. Helcher, George William Neal, and "Niblo." The editor describes the paper as "an excellent family newspaper, devoted to the cause of freedom."
