Book Description
Excerpt from Russia of the Russians The fundamental difference between Russian and English history is the difference between the great plain and the island. English history tells of the upbuilding by an island people of the greatest maritime empire in the world. Russian history tells how a people whose original home lay between the slopes of the Carpathians and the Dnieper gradually, with toil, pain and effort, secured possession of the greatest plain in the world and so created the broadest of land empires. There are curious analogies, striking points of resemblance in the process of empire-building in both countries. But the fundamental difference between the island and the plain, between a sea and a land empire makes itself constantly felt, and largely accounts for striking differences between the two nations in character, social structure and political development. The island constitutes a secure physical basis for national effort. It guarantees seclusion and privacy. It renders intercourse with the outside world dependent far less on the will of outsiders than on the islanders themselves. The island nation is largely protected against outside interference. It is in a much better position than continental nations to concentrate its energies on ques ions of internal development. Its social structure is compact and highly organised. Imperial expansion beyond the seas does not alter the essential characteristics of the structure, it only throws them into greater relief. In thinking of the British Empire one thinks primarily and mainly of England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Russian Literature Since the Crimean'war, in 1855, the power of Russia, although it suffered in that contest, has been much more noticed by other nations than it had been before; and since the abolition of serfdom in her dominion, in 1861, her government has become a study for other statesmen besides her own: but no nation yet has given her literature more than a pass ing notice. The reason may be plain. 'her great military power is felt by the world, and her policy, in reference to the law of nations, has its influence, but her literature, which will ultimately represent the best results of all. Her powers, is not yet established. Perhaps her banner may yet wave, her policy rule, and her language be heard, from the chilling snows of Siberia to the burning rays of Good hopel - for she is rapidly availing herself of the science, art, and skill of other nations - if so, then her literature will be known to the world; for the school and college, in the range of time, are more powerful than the cabinet and the field. Book Description
Excerpt from Russia and the Russians in 1842, Vol. 1 When natives of other European countries have resided for some time in Russia, and on their return home express themselves unfavourably respect ing what they have seen and heard there, the Russians are accustomed to charge them with ingratitude, and to say, We gave you a kind and cordial reception; you enjoyed yourselves while you were among us, and now in return you traduce us behind our backs, betray the confidence that we placed in you, and proclaim our secrets to all the world. Book Description
Excerpt from Russia's Gift to the World In any account of Russian literature, two kinds of it have to be considered which are historically separate, though the one to some extent grew out of and is founded upon the other. There is the early popular literature of tales, ballads, and poems which grew up among the people, was handed down by memory, and very often was not committed to writing at all until modern times. There is also the regular literature of books, which begins when language has been studied as an art and reduced to rules. This latter is the form which literature takes in modern times. In both forms the recox d of Russia is extraordinarily rich. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
