Book Description
Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was one of the most important contributors to the study of religions at the beginning of the 20th century. His book, The Idea of the Holy, became a sensation in its time, and his account of numinous experience as a mysterium tremendum et fascinans ("a mystery that both repels and attracts") had an effect equalled by few other ideas in the study of religions. His vocabulary broke through narrow disciplinary bounds and was taken up by scholars in a variety of disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences.Since the 1960s, Otto has been increasingly overlooked and neglected. As thinkers and scholars have turned in many other intellectual directions, they have tended to see Otto as representative of a past to be rejected. The Holy in a Pluralistic World gathers essays from a variety of perspectives - theology, religious studies, intellectual history, and cultural studies - to address what Otto's legacy for the 21st century might be.This volume explores Otto's ideas and their contexts, then turns to the area that Otto, more than any other German theologian or philosopher of religion, opened up: an engagement with the world of religions. However, Otto's influence has never been confined to systematic religious thought and the study of religions. His ideas have resonated more widely, and essays presented here examine this wider impact, in architecture, poetry, politics, and the contemporary world more generally. The Holy in a Pluralistic World is not an attempt to revivify Rudolf Otto, nor offer a magisterial statement about Otto's significance today. It issues an invitation to those with an interest not just in religions but also in cultural phenomena to take another look at Otto and his ideas. Perhaps they will find more than they expect, and something that they can use.

Book Description
Melissa Raphael presents a critical examination of the contribution made to the twentieth-century concept of holiness by the German Protestant Rudolf Otto (1869-1937). Contrary to the received view that Otto's work is primarily significant to the history and practice of the phenomenology of religion, this book argues that Otto's idea of the holy should be an anchor concept of theological discourse.

Book Description
Marcel Gauchet has launched one of the most ambitious and controversial works of speculative history recently to appear, based on the contention that Christianity is "the religion of the end of religion." In The Disenchantment of the World, Gauchet reinterprets the development of the modern west, with all its political and psychological complexities, in terms of mankind's changing relation to religion. He views Western history as a movement away from religious society, beginning with prophetic Judaism, gaining tremendous momentum in Christianity, and eventually leading to the rise of the political state. Gauchet's view that monotheistic religion itself was a form of social revolution is rich with implications for readers in fields across the humanities and social sciences. Life in religious society, Gauchet reminds us, involves a very different way of being than we know in our secular age: we must imagine prehistoric times where ever-present gods controlled every aspect of daily reality, and where ancestor worship grounded life's meaning in a far-off past. As prophecy-oriented religions shaped the concept of a single omnipotent God, one removed from the world and yet potentially knowable through prayer and reflection, human beings became increasingly free. Gauchet's paradoxical argument is that the development of human political and psychological autonomy must be understood against the backdrop of this double movement in religious consciousness--the growth of divine power and its increasing distance from human activity. In a fitting tribute to this passionate and brilliantly argued book, Charles Taylor offers an equally provocative foreword. Offering interpretations of key concepts proposed by Gauchet, Taylor also explores an important question: Does religion have a place in the future of Western society? The book does not close the door on religion but rather invites us to explore its socially constructive powers, which continue to shape Western politics and conceptions of the state.

Book Description
Rudolf Otto exerted a major formative influence on the study of religions in the first half of the 20th century. His landmark book, Das Heilige (1917), translated into English as The Idea of the Holy (1923), identified as central to religion the experience of the numinous, a word he coined. That numinous was, in his terms, a mysterium tremendum et fascinans-a fascinating yet terrifying mystery. This influential view set the agenda for most professional scholars of religion until well into the 1960s. It also introduced a set of concepts that has enjoyed wide cultural currency. Still today creative writers and artists occasionally refer to the numinous. This book introduces general readers to Otto's thought in The Idea of the Holy and helps them develop a fuller understanding of it. It presents the problems with which Otto wrestled, among them questions about evolution and religion, the historical development of Christianity, and religion's role in making a better society. It sets Otto's ideas about the numinous in the broader currents of thought to which they belong. It also examines criticisms of Otto's ideas and concludes with an examination of how scholars today approach the topics Otto addressed.

Book Description
Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) is one of the foremost pioneers in the study of religion, and as a theologian, philosopher and phenomenologist of religion, he exerted a worldwide influence in his field.
Today, however, the position that Rudolf Otto holds seems less favourable. Many critics, especially in Germany, regard Otto's work, which moves freely between the disciplines of Theology and Religionswissenschaft, as lacking in methodological rigour.
Our starting-point is the Idea of the Holy, a category which comprises both the rational and the non-rational dimensions of religion. This provides us with a key to link Otto's theoretical thinking with the practical initiatives in which he was engaged. Thematic parallels are suggested, firstly, between Otto's work in Christology, and Liturgical Reform, and secondly, in relation to his thinking on ethics, and the establishment of the Religious League of Mankind.
