Book Description
Here are over 1,000 pages of authoritative information on the archaeology of Greek and Roman civilization. The sites discussed in the more than 2,800 entries are scattered from Britain to India and from the shores of the Black Sea to the coast of North Africa and up the Nile. They are located on sixteen area maps, keyed to the entries. The entries were written by 375 scholars from sixteen nations, many of whom have worked at the sites they describe. Until now our knowledge of the Classical period has been scattered in hundreds of sources dating from antiquity to our own times. This volume provides essential information on work accomplished, in progress, and still to be undertaken. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
This volume is a collection of essays to celebrate the 90th birthday of Sheppard Frere, formerly Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at the University of Oxford. Most concern the archaeology of Roman Britain, which has been at the heart of Sheppard's research interests, and to which he has made such a distinguished contribution. The book covers such varied themes as early urban defences in Britain (Roger Wilson), the status of London (Roger Tomlin), the employment of civilian building-gangs on Hadrian's Wall (Michael Fulford), iron weapons from Newstead (W H Manning), military vici in Britain (Sebastian Sommer), the terminology and use of samian cups (Geoffrey Dannell), the text of a travel diary about the Antonine Wall in 1697 (Lawrence Keppie), attitudes towards conserving Hadrian's Wall for posterity (Christopher Young), and red-slip pottery from the Egyptian fort of Nag el-Hagar (Michael Mackensen) . The book is completed by a new Bibliography of Sheppard Frere's publications (compiled by Roger Goodburn and Sally Stow).

Book Description
The supply of unpolluted water was of high priority throughout the Roman Empire and in Britain, as elsewhere, organised water supplies played a fundamental role in the development of forts, settlements and towns. This detailed and highly informative study gathers evidence from over 800 archaeological sites, including remains of aqueducts, wells, baths, drains, pipes, springs and tanks. Sections examine the validity of the data and the need to reclassify many sites due to their water features which have been neglected in the past. Burgers also looks at the logistics of designing and building the Roman water supply system, the engineering principles involved, the distribution of water-related features in Roman Britain and social and financial aspects of their construction and use. The database is presented in table format.
