Excerpt from Journal of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Session of the National Encampment, Grand Army of the Republic, Boston, Mass: August 13th and 14th, 1890 As we are about to open this Encampment, I wish to say a word in explanation of my report and of my work. During the latter part of the present year my time has been so much taken up with my own business, my business partner being very ill and not having been in the office for the last three months, that I have not put together what I would liked to have done, to present to this Encampment; and therefore I shall ask you to look upon it very charitably, and not read it after I have got through with it. I will say to you further, comrades, in opening this Encampment, that I know nothing, or next to nothing, about parliamentary law, so I am going to do everything that every comrade tells me. I want to get through with this work properly, and I trust that we may do our work expeditiously and in harmony; but I don't want to have you try to tie up the Chair in too many technicalities.
