Recent Developments in Well-Posed Variational Problems
Author: Roberto Lucchetti
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401584729
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
This volume contains several surveys focused on the ideas of approximate solutions, well-posedness and stability of problems in scalar and vector optimization, game theory and calculus of variations. These concepts are of particular interest in many fields of mathematics. The idea of stability goes back at least to J. Hadamard who introduced it in the setting of differential equations; the concept of well-posedness for minimum problems is more recent (the mid-sixties) and originates with A.N. Tykhonov. It turns out that there are connections between the two properties in the sense that a well-posed problem which, at least in principle, is "easy to solve", has a solution set that does not vary too much under perturbation of the data of the problem, i.e. it is "stable". These themes have been studied in depth for minimum problems and now we have a general picture of the related phenomena in this case. But, of course, the same concepts can be studied in other more complicated situations as, e.g. vector optimization, game theory and variational inequalities. Let us mention that in several of these new areas there is not even a unique idea of what should be called approximate solution, and the latter is at the basis of the definition of well posed problem.

Nonstandard Models of Arithmetic and Set Theory
Author: Ali Enayat
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821835351
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
This is the proceedings of the AMS special session on nonstandard models of arithmetic and set theory held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore (MD). The volume opens with an essay from Haim Gaifman that probes the concept of non-standardness in mathematics and provides a fascinating mix of historical and philosophical insights into the nature of nonstandard mathematical structures. In particular, Gaifman compares and contrasts the discovery of nonstandard models with other key mathematical innovations, such as the introduction of various number systems, the modern concept of function, and non-Euclidean geometries. Other articles in the book present results related to nonstandard models in arithmetic and set theory, including a survey of known results on the Turing upper bounds of arithmetic sets and functions. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in logic, especially model theory.

Mathematicians in Bologna 1861–1960
Author: Salvatore COEN
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3034802277
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 555
Book Description
The scientific personalities of Luigi Cremona, Eugenio Beltrami, Salvatore Pincherle, Federigo Enriques, Beppo Levi, Giuseppe Vitali, Beniamino Segre and of several other mathematicians who worked in Bologna in the century 1861–1960 are examined by different authors, in some cases providing different view points. Most contributions in the volume are historical; they are reproductions of original documents or studies on an original work and its impact on later research. The achievements of other mathematicians are investigated for their present-day importance.

Author: George Isac
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387739882
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
This extremely useful book is devoted to the study of scalar and asymptotic scalar derivatives and their applications to some problems in nonlinear analysis, Riemannian geometry and applied mathematics. The theoretical results are developed in particular with respect to the study of complementarity problems, monotonicity of nonlinear mappings and the non-gradient type monotonicity on Riemannian manifolds. The text is intended for researchers and graduate students working in the fields of nonlinear analysis, Riemannian geometry and applied mathematics.
