Book Description
Excerpt from Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Grape Vines and Small Fruits, Shrubs, Plants, Roses, Etc., Cultivated and for Sale at the Geneva Nursery, 1886 Culture OF the pear. - On several accounts the pear possesses ad vantages over other fruits. The first is its delicious quality, as found in the finest varieties its buttery or melting texture, and its delicious and per fumed flavor. In this respect it greatly excels the apple, and keeps nearly as well. Even the peach is scarcely superior, while it keeps only two or three days. But the pear, like everything highly desirable and valuable, cannot be had without attention, labor and skill. There are only a few exceptions to this general rule. The relative prices Of the apple and pear being about one TO ten, show at the same time the superior value Of the latter, and the greater skill required to bring it to perfection. The market value of fine pears is a good indication or measure Of the amount of attention which this fruit deserves. Book Description
Excerpt from General Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, Roses, Bulbs and Bulbous Plants, Grape Vines, Small Fruits, Etc., 1900 Our Canadian Nurseries, consisting of between three and four hundred acres, are at Brown's Nurseries, P. O. Ont., 12 miles from Niagara Falls. This is in the beau tiful Niagara district, considered by all prominent fruit growers as the most fertile and best fruit-producing part of Canada. The climate and soil are almost identical 'with that at Rochester. We are the only house growing stock in both the United States and Canada. The men in charge of our nurseries are careful and experienced propagators and cultivators. We personally oversee all our plantings, and watch with zealous eye every variety, so that nothing unfit for sale shall be allowed to be put on the market. We are especially particular to see that all our stock has a solid, firm texture of wood with abundant fibrous roots. Planters will know what this means to them.
