Book Description
In all the Nordic countries there is a declared policy of increasing work participation among seniors. The most important reason comes from a more long-term population, generation and welfare perspective: gradually, as more and more older people live longer, it is becoming increasingly expensive for younger age groups to finance and maintain relatively generous welfare schemes. The report a matter of health and job satisfaction compares and analyses the situation of seniors on the labour market in the Nordic countries as well as pension and social insurance systems. Seven in ten seniors aged 50-64 are in work, while three in ten have either retired early or are on the way out of working life. Impaired health and capacity for work represent the most important "exit route", followed by voluntary, flexible pensions, unemployment and working environment. Other causes include formal and informal barriers and age discrimination. People are different, seniors not least. Health, duties and working environment are crucial to more seniors being able and wanting to work for longer, in addition to which they want to be seen, made use of and appreciated!

Book Description
Abstract: The labour force in Nordic countries will change over the next few years. Absent additional pension policy changes, a majority of working persons age 50 and older will retire by 2020. Average retirement age varies by educational level, field of study and country. Persons with a post-secondary education tend to retire older than persons with a secondary education. Denmark and Finland have lower actual retirement ages than Sweden or Norway, roughly a year and a half lower for men and two years lower for women. Because of rising educational levels, actual retirement age will likely rise even absent additional policy changes. Because retirement lower in Denmark and Finland than in Sweden or Norway, there appears to be more 'room' in the former countries to influence retirement age via policy. There is also more 'room' to close the gender gap in average retirement age in Denmark than in other countries. The decision to retire is affected by many factors, one of which is educational background. This report focuses on the education dimension, showing how retirement age has varied in recent years and how such changes will affect the size of the labour force in the near future

Book Description
This book uses a citizenship perspective to analyse the causes and effects of early exit/early retirement, including retirement through disability benefits. Major research questions include: Which factors causes seniors to retire early? How do early retirees experience their retirement? Is early exit/retirement a 'release' from harsh working conditions? To what extent does early exit/retirement lead to economic, social and political marginalisation? Do disability pensioners experience retirement differently from regular early retirees, and if so, why? In a nutshell, do seniors retire early because they feel down and out? or free at last? The book is based on comparable survey data among gainfully employed, regular early retirees and disability pensioners in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. This book provides new insights for academics and students interested in the mechanisms behind different types of early exit/retirement, as well as the extent to which early exit/retirement leads to social, economic and political marginalisation. The book is also of value for policy makers and lay people who are concerned with integration of vulnerable groups, and how to influence retirement decisions.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-506/ All the Nordic countries have high rates of female employment and are often ranked among the most gender-equal countries in the world. Nevertheless, there exists a gap between women’s and men’s pensions in all these countries. The size of the gender pension gap varies considerably between 28% in Sweden and 5% in Iceland. The report offers knowledge about how pension systems’ design impacts the gender pension gap and provides examples of how the gap can be reduced. Data describing the gender pension gap and the gap in contributions and pension wealth have been collected from state agencies and research institutes in the Nordic countries for 2019. The report is part of a collaboration between the Swedish Women’s Lobby (SWL), the Finnish women´s rights organization NYTKIS and The United Federation of Workers in Denmark 3F and is funded by the Nordic Gender Equality Fund.
