Book Description
This study examines current research methods utilized by genealogists, and seeks to discover the impact of emerging tools and technologies on their information seeking needs and behaviors. When it became clear that there is a shortage of scholarly studies identifying the use of newer technologies (i.e. blogs, social media, and apps), an original survey for genealogists was created. Over four hundred genealogists were surveyed regarding their use of both traditional research methods (methods that have existed for many decades) and Internet/electronic resources, in order to demonstrate which new trends are emerging. The data from the survey might lessen the gap in current scholarly research. Technology is constantly changing, and the findings show which trends are currently being utilized the most by genealogists. The results indicate that genealogists are definitely using more technology to research their family trees. In fact, they adapt fairly quickly to new methods, relying heavily on technology and the Internet to conduct research and share information. Due to the ease of using technology, fewer and fewer genealogists rely on in-house visits to repositories to access original documents. The research concludes with a discussion on where the use of technology for genealogical research is headed, and what genealogists hope to accomplish by using new tools and technologies.

Book Description
How do family historians know they are producing or receiving trustworthy results? This official manual from the Board of Certification for Genealogists, essentially a users' guide for family historians, provides standards for genealogical researchers to assess their own and others' work. The revised second edition, published in 2019 with additional revisions in 2021, increases the clarity of DNA and privacy standards. Those standards are especially useful in the twenty-first century, when many genealogists use a complex new tool—DNA testing—and trace living people more often than they did in the past.

Book Description
The first decade of the new millennium has been an exciting time for the family historian. The increasing availability of online resources has transformed the genealogical research process. DNA testing and the new generation of social networking websites have developed in parallel and are becoming increasingly useful tools. DNA testing can now be used to prove or disprove genealogical connections and will put you in touch with your genetic cousins around the world. It can also take you back beyond the paper trail into your pre-surname history. Social networking tools can help you to find and stay in touch with friends and relatives, and provide new ways to share and collaborate with other researchers. This book looks at all the latest advances in DNA testing from the Y-chromosome tests used in surname projects through to the latest autosomal DNA tests. Debbie Kennett explores the use of new social media, including Facebook, Twitter, blogs and wikis, along with more traditional networking methods. DNA and Social Networking is an indispensable guide to the use of twenty-first-century technology in family history research.

Book Description
Biosemiotics (bios = life and semion = sign) is an interdisciplinary science that studies communication and signification in living systems. Communication is the essential characteristic of life. An organism is a message to future generations that specifies how to survive and reproduce. Any autocatalytic system transfers information (ie initial conditions) to its progeny so that daughter systems will eventually reach the same state as their parent. Self-reproducing systems have a semantic closure because they define themselves in their progeny. A sign (defined in a broadest sense) is an object that is a part of some self-reproducing system. A sign is always useful for the system and its value can be determined by its contribution to the reproductive value of the entire system. The major trend in the evolution of signs is the increase of their complexity via development of new hierarchical levels, ie, metasystem transitions. This book presents new research in this dynamic field.

Book Description
"The DNA testing companies have flooded the market with many promotional ads that promise to unlock secrets in our family trees. The result of the promotions has generated large sales of DNA test kits and large numbers of genealogists who are looking for methods to understand their DNA test results. I hope this book will give the reader some hints on how to use DNA results to expand their research and family history. The critical value of this book is my explanation of how to overcome the scientific nature of the results by looking at your results using traditional genealogical skills. My explanation includes practical examples of how to use the tools, and my goal is to simplify how you analyze your results in terms that all of us as genealogists can understand. I present a case-study, where I discuss using these tools to find a biological father whose existence was a total surprise to his son. Genetics is not an easy science to understand, and many test-takers are confused by their results. Use the tools discussed in this book to begin searching for an understanding of your DNA results. Focus on the goals you had when you ordered your test kit. Follow the clues to open up new information for your family history. DNA testing is only one tool in your genealogy tool kit, but it is a powerful tool. Use it wisely. Learn to use DNA and traditional genealogical techniques in tandem, and you will be able to harness the full value of genetic testing."--Adapted from back cover.
