Latin America Confronts the United States
Author: Tom Long
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316462684
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
Latin America Confronts the United States offers a new perspective on US-Latin America relations. Drawing on research in six countries, the book examines how Latin American leaders are able to overcome power asymmetries to influence US foreign policy. The book provides in-depth explorations of key moments in post-World War II inter-American relations - foreign economic policy before the Alliance for Progress, the negotiation of the Panama Canal Treaties, the expansion of trade through the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the growth of counternarcotics in Plan Colombia. The new evidence challenges earlier, US-centric explanations of these momentous events. Though differences in power were fundamental to each of these cases, relative weakness did not prevent Latin American leaders from aggressively pursuing their interests vis-à-vis the United States. Drawing on studies of foreign policy and international relations, the book examines how Latin American leaders achieved this influence - and why they sometimes failed.

In Their Own Best Interest
Author: Lars Schoultz
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 067498899X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
Winner of the William M. LeoGrande Prize For over a century, the United States has sought to improve the behavior of the peoples of Latin America. Perceiving their neighbors to the south as underdeveloped and unable to govern themselves, U.S. policy makers have promoted everything from representative democracy and economic development to oral hygiene. But is improvement a progressive impulse to help others, or realpolitik in pursuit of a superpower’s interests? “In this subtle and searing critique of U.S. efforts to ‘uplift’ Latin America, Lars Schoultz challenges us to question the fundamental tenets of the development industry that became entrenched in the U.S. foreign policy bureaucracy over the last century.” —Piero Gleijeses, author of Visions of Freedom “In this masterful work, Lars Schoultz provides a companion and follow-up to his classic Beneath the United States...A necessary and rewarding read for scholars and students of U.S. foreign policy and inter-American relations.” —Renata Keller, The Americas

Intimate Ties, Bitter Struggles
Author: Alan McPherson
Publisher: Potomac Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1597973939
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 443
Book Description
Over the last sixty years, the relationship between the United States and Latin America has been marred by ideological conflict, imbalances of power, and economic disparity. The U.S.-sponsored coup in Guatemala, the near lynching of Vice President Richard Nixon in Venezuela, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion are a few reminders of the sometimes dramatic confrontations between North and South. Yet this relationship has also been characterized by accelerating economic and cultural interdependence that is significantly altering the old paradigm of U.S. hegemony and Latin American resistance. Alan McPherson uses multinational sources to survey and analyze the history of this relationship. Intimate Ties, Bitter Struggles reflects the most up-to-date research on state-to-state interactions and recognizes the influence of culture and non-state actors on international relations. Major topics include the debate over economic dependency, the U.S. response to revolutions in Latin America during the Cold War, military interventions and covert operations, human rights, migration, the North American Free Trade Agreement and economic integration, the Iran-Contra affair, the war on drugs, and Latinos in the United States. The author's concise narrative and selection of primary-source documents offer an ideal introduction to U.S.-Latin American relations for students and for anyone with an interest in understanding the dynamic interplay between these hemispheric neighbors.
