Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of Elyria, Ohio: Dedicated to the Lorain County Historical Society; March 1, 1900 In 1816, Mr. Heman Ely, of West Springfield, Mass, left his home in a sulky, came to Buffalo, from there he finished his journey on horseback. In coming along the lake shore he followed the trail through the woods along the lake. The ground was soft and gave way, the horse's hind feet were thrown over the high bank, but he clung with his fore feet to the ground and the life of the founder of Elyria was saved. Mr. Ely made his home with Moses Eldred, who kept a log tavern two miles east of Elyria, known at this date as the Savage farm. Book Description
“An incredibly strong debut.... It’s well worth your time.”—New York Journal of Books In a world where female bodies hold the map to the future, one young woman must fight to change her family’s fate. Celeste Morton has eagerly awaited her passage to adulthood. Like every girl, she was born with a set of childhood markings—the freckles, moles, and birthmarks on her body that foretell her future and that of those around her—and with puberty will come a new set of predictions that will solidify her fate. The possibilities are tantalizing enough to outweigh her worry that the future she dreams of won’t be the one she’s fated to experience. Celeste’s beloved brother, Miles, who is training to be a fortune-teller, is equally anticipating what Celeste’s transformation will reveal. But when Celeste matures into her adult markings, she discovers a devastating omen about Miles’s future. Desperate to protect her family from the truth, Celeste’s once charmed life unravels, forcing her to question everything she’s ever known about fate and female agency, and face the perils of knowing what’s to come too soon.

Book Description
Designing Victory tracks Madison from his native Cleveland and several points further south in his extraordinary journey to a first-class education in domestic and international institutions. One prize at the end of Madison's struggles was an opportunity to collaborate with and learn from virtually every one of the twentieth century's most storied architects, including Le Corbusier, Philip Johnson, Walter Gropius, and I.M. Pei. Among Madison's signature design achievements are the U.S. Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, the Engineering & Nuclear Facility at Tuskegee Institute, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.Designing Victory also recounts Madison's adventures in love and war-he's a Buffalo Soldier and a Purple Heart medal awardee-and explores his rise to become a cultural and civic leader in Cleveland. Designing Victory tells the tale of a talented, courageous man who learned early on how to win the long game and become one of the most celebrated living architects by refusing to listen to those who told him that a black architect would starve.
