Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Ecclesiastical History I proceed now to consider the ends which may be answered by ecclesiastical history, and to inquire what is the readiest and most profitable way of studying it. Before that memorable era, the incarnation of the Son of God, the history of the church of God was the history of one particular people, first distinguished by the name of the patriarch Israel, (otherwise called jacob) whose descendants they were and after the loss of the ten tribes, who were carried into captivity by Shalma nezer, king of Assyria, denominated from Judah, one of the sons of Jacob, and one whose progeny the greater part of the remnant were, the nation of the Jews. The history of that mph, and the history of the church, was under the Mosaick economy the same thing. Neither do we find in the annals, and other remains of those ancient. Times, the least vestige of the distinction of a community into church and state, such as hath obtained universally in the nations who have received the christian law. This distinction hath given rise to a speciesof history, whereof the world before had not conceived so much as an idea. It may not therefore be improper, in the first place, to trace its origin, that we may the better apprehend what is meant by the history of the church. Book Description
Excerpt from Remarks Upon the Ecclesiastical History of the Ancient Churches of the Albigenses Nay, perhaps we are to think ourselves obliged to the Bishop of Meaux, who, raising himself a little above the common method of the Doctors of his own communion, has limited himself to accuse the Waldenses of schism only, whereas he might with as much reason have charged them with heresy, if he had followed the writers of controversy of his own party, or the legends of the saints of his comma nion. For it is certain, that the writers of contro versy in the Church of Rome, and those who have writ the lives of those Inquisitors that have been canonized, have never looked upon the Waldenses as any other than Manichees; so thoroughly rooted is the spirit of calumny in the members of that Church: the character of father of Eggheing very necessary to support that of 195w honourably, whereof they have been in possession so very long. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius: The First Book and Selections, Edited for Schools and Colleges The whole of Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History is too much for a text-book. These selections relate mainly to the early period, to the lives of the apostles and other persons mentioned in the Bible, to the history of the apostolic or other inspired writings, the fate of Je rusalem, the great persecutions, the acts of martyrs, and the life and manners of the early ages. What the Church treasured up on these subjects is of interest to all men, and a knowledge of them comes home to the business and bosoms of all thoughtful members of a Christian community. It would seem that the study of them in the admirable language in which they were originally recorded might help to make our college graduates not only learned in the Greek language, but stout-hearted men, ready to work and suher for the truth.
