Book Description
The Recombination of Genetic Material aims to introduce the elementary properties of recombinational phenomena. Genetic recombination is a favorite research topic in biology due to its significance. In fact, a simple recombination event can have a profound effect and sometimes can mean the difference between the survival and the demise of an organism. Examples of this are provided in this book. This work also describes numerous recombination systems, mechanisms of the major types of recombination, and the macroscopic products of this biological process. Molecular analyses of recombination enzymes and substrates that have been identified or implicated are also shown. This book will be valuable as a reference material to those interested in this field of study.

Book Description
The Bacteria: Volume IX: Antibiotic-Producing Streptomyces explores how Streptomyces, including actinomycetes, produce a variety of antibiotics such as aminocyclitols, ansamycins, macrolides, and tetracyclines. Topics covered range from physiology and fermentation to genetic recombination and chromosome mapping in Streptomyces, biomodification of antibiotics by Streptomyces, and biosynthesis of tylosin and erythromycin. The genome structure and evolution of Streptomyces are also discussed. This volume is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with a discussion on the taxonomy of Streptomyces based on morphology, physiological characteristics, the composition of cell constituents such as cell walls, and the presence of characteristic lipids, sugars, and quinones. The discussion then turns to the intraspecific and interspecific recombination in Streptomyces; pathways of DNA repair and mutagenesis in Streptomyces fradiae; strategies for isolation of improved Streptomyces mutants for antibiotic production; and derivation of DNA cloning vectors from Streptomyces phages. The biology and use of Streptomyces plasmids as cloning vectors are also described. The final chapter is devoted to major structural classes of antibiotics produced by Streptomyces, including anthracyclines and other quinones, ß-lactams, macrolides, nucleosides, peptides, polyenes, polyether antibiotics, and tetracyclines. This book will be of value to microbiologists, bacteriologists, biochemists, and biologists.

Book Description
This book will deal with heat shock proteins and more generally with stress-related inducible gene expression as a pleiotropic adaptive response to stress. It presents a textbook-like overview of the field not only to heat shock experts, but to physiologists, pharmacologists, physicians, neuropsychologists and others as well. It is intended to be a state-of-the-art and perspective book rather than an up-to-date presentation of recent data. It should provide a basis for new experimental approaches to fields at the edge of the classical heat shock field. Drugs, UV irradiation and environmental toxics will considered as important modulators of the stress response. Radical scavengers such as superoxide dismutases and inducible regulatory proteins of metallic ion status such as ferritin as well as immunophilins and protein disulfide isomerases will be considered within the frame of stress proteins. The potential practical applications of heat shock proteins in toxicology and medicine for the diagnosis, prognosis and eventually therapy of clinical conditions associated with an increased oxidative burden will be outlined. The role of heat shock proteins in the modulation of immune responses will also be included. The book considers heat shock from a broad perspective including fields for which heat-shock may become of importance in the very near future such as cellular responses to environmental stresses and complex stress responses under specific conditions. It was also felt timely to incorporate a whole section on medical and technological applications of stress proteins.

Book Description
Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 30 is a collection of papers that deals with eukaryotic DNA methylation, gene expression, regulation of nitrogenase activity, and the recognition of DNA by Type II restriction enzymes. Other papers discuss the mitochondrial Krebs cycle, enzyme mechanisms, transducin, and calcium-dependent cellular processes. One paper explains that methylation and demethylation of the DNA are complicated active processes, involving many aspects of the genome. The paper also notes that within the gross changes in methylation patterns, specific CpG sites play important roles in the expression or shutdown of target genes. Another paper concludes that, mono-ADP ribosylation being a mechanism of action of the diphtheria toxin, ADP ribosylation plays a role in normal cell metabolism by regulating the activity of key enzymes. One paper explains the significance of restriction enzymes into the nature of DNA-protein interactions; as well as the enzyme's possible role in discriminating between alternative DNA sequences. Biochemists, cellular researchers, micro-biologists, bio-physicists, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology will find the collection very useful.

Book Description
The First volume gives an overview of the enzymes involved in DNA synthesis and modification; the second volume deals with the RNA-enzymes. Although the major emphasis of the book is on eukaryotic enzymes, a separate chapter dealing with prokaryotic DNA repair enzymes has been included to discuss the major advances in this field in recent years. There are two separate chapters on RNA polymerases to provide a comprehensive coverage of the enzymes from lower eukaryotes, plants and higher eukaryotes.
