Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Pi Kappa Alpha On the night of March 1st, 1868, the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded at the University of Virginia, and for forty years this College order has lead indeed a varied career. First it loomed up brightly on the horizon of the Grecian world, and promised fair to become a worthy rival of its older and more strongly entrenched fellows. Then the hand of Fate was laid upon her, and at the end of twenty years, with only two chapters to sustain her good name, her era was about closed, her sun seemed to be almost set. It was at this time that a mere handful of her noble sons came to the rescue, and by almost superhuman efforts, succeeded in raising the drooping standard, and planted it more firmly than ever before. Book Description
Excerpt from Shield and Diamond of Pi Kappa Alpha At best the meetings of the alumni chapters are held at long intervals, but it does seem that they might all agree upon some day during the year when they might meet for a banquet or smoker. Other fraternities celebrate the day of their founding, and this idea seems to be a worthy one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity: 1865-1900 It is with mingled feelings of relief and pleasure that the accompanying Catalogue is presented to the fraternity. During fifteen months the labor has been all-absorbing, and the relief at realizing the task completed, is known only to those who have experienced the sensation. The demands of the Catalogne have consumed much time that should have been spent in other employments. But the time and labor have been given freely, and if the results are such as to receive the approval of the fraternity, the Editor will feel that the time has not been spent in vain. A few words concerning the Catalogue itself may not be amiss. It has been the Editor's aim and object to prepare a book which should be full, accurate and complete in every particular, and at tbe same time be clear and concise. Accordingly no historical narratives of the chapters arc published, but tho important facts, dates, names, etc., are given briefly and uniformly for all chapters. The book is intended for use rather than for ornament, and accordingly all illustrations are omitted, with the exception of the heraldic frontispiece. For convenience in finding, the chapter rolls have been inserted in (Greek) alphabetic order, rather than in the order of their establishment, and for the same reason the lists of members have been similarly arranged. The geographical index of members, the first that has appeared in a K. A. Catalogue, has been prepared with considerable expenditure of labor, and it is hoped that its usefulness will justify the outlay. The progress and growth of the Order is most gratifying. At the date of the last Catalogue (1891) 2309 persons had been initiated, and of this number 2138 were alive and in good standing. Within nine years the members have almost doubled, and the first Catalogue contains the names of 4481 initiates, of whom 4119 are alive and in good standing.
