Book Description
This is a pioneering study of the impact of Christianization among the Chinese. Focusing primarily on the minority peoples of Yunnan province, it nonetheless fully mirrors the historical development of the Protestant mission in China. Drawing on many years of observation in the field and upon a comprehensive consultation of official documents relating to Christians on the mountain peaks, the study chronicles how the early foreign missionaries, thanks to their self-sacrifice and the examples they set of religious zeal, cemented the hitherto segregatory and leaderless tribes together, vigorously shaking the desolate mountain folk out of their age-long isolation. It was the trend of the time to identify Christianity as the desirable agent to promote socio-economic change in the undeveloped communities. This is a timely original contribution to the historical study of the Christian missionary enterprise and the pressing problem of freedom of worship that currently exists in China.

Book Description
Excerpt from History of the China Mission: Of the Reformed Church in the United States The author of this volume needs no introduction to the pastors and people of the Reformed Church in the United States. He was born in the bosom of our Church, and he grew to manhood in a home where the voice of prayer was daily heard. He is a graduate of college and seminary, and he now writes after thirty years in the university of missionary experience in Japan and China. As the founder of our China Mission, he knows all about its inner life, and that adds still greater value to this most fascinating history. It was by action of the Board of Foreign Missions that Doctor Hoy undertook this labor of love, and we bespeak for it a careful perusal. Our Church has been longing for the opportunity to partake of the feast of good things which is here spread before it. Let all of us partake of it, and thereby receive fresh strength for a glorious advance in the work of our China Mission. Book Description
During the nineteenth century, Christian missionaries vied for the Chinese souls they thought they were saving. But many things held them back: Western gunboat diplomacy, unequal treaties and their own prejudices, which increased hostility towards Christianity. 'One more Christian, one less Chinese,' has long been a popular cliche in China. Guns and Gospel examines the accusation of 'cultural imperialism' levelled against the missionaries and explores their complex and ambivalent relationships with the opium trade and British imperialism. Ambrose Mong follows key figures among the missionaries, such as Robert Morrison, Charles Gutzlaff, James Hudson Taylor and Timothy Richard, uncovering why some succeeded where others failed, and asks whether they really became lackeys to imperialism.
