Book Description
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.

Book Description
Fluidized-bed combustion is being studied as a means of removing from the gas phase nearly all of the atmospheric pollutants (sulfur and nitrogen compounds) generated during the combustion of fossil fuels. Particulate lime solids (additives) are introduced into the fluidized bed and react with the sulfur compound formed during combustion. Information has been obtained on (1) pollution control by fluidized-bed combustion of oil with an excess of air and by the combustion of coal with a deficiency of air, (2) the thermodynamics of several proposed processes for regenerating additives, and (3) experimental regeneration of sulfur-containing additive by the two most promising processes -- a one-step reductive decomposition of CaSO/sub 4/ and a two-step (reduction-CO/ sub 2//H/sub 2/O regeneration) procedure. (auth).
