Book Description
English is widely spoken around the world and is considered an international language. British and American English are the two most commonly spoken varieties of English, each with its own distinct characteristics. These differences can be observed in pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and expression (Algeo, 2006: 1). English language relies heavily on the verb, as it is essential to include at least one subject and verb in a sentence. But irregular verbs in American and British English can cause confusion due to their unpredictable nature. An interesting finding suggests that irregular verbs can be grouped based on shared sound changes, which can aid in memory retrieval. This book aims to redefine the categorization of English verbs by analyzing their inflectional patterns using morphophonemics of generative morphology theory. The book aims to answer four questions: 1) What are the inflectional patterns of regular verbs in American and British English? 2) What are the inflectional patterns in irregular verbs in American and British English? 3) What factors influence the use of certain inflectional patterns? 4) How productive is the use of regular and irregular verb patterns?

Book Description
There are around 400 English verbs that have an irregular simple past tense or past participle and even more that manifest some form of irregularity in the present tense. Most books on irregular verbs simply list all irregular verbs in alphabetical order, with all their forms and a few examples of use. This book takes a different approach, which is more suitable for people who want to read a book from cover to cover. Verbs are grouped together according to common patterns, such as a -d that becomes a -t in the past tense (e.g. bend, send), the pattern "-ink, -ank, -unk" (e.g. drink, sink), and verbs that do not change at all (e.g. cut, put).

Book Description
This textbook approaches the history of English from a theoretical perspective. The book provides a brief chronological overview describing the way in which the English language has changed over time from Old English to Modern English, while subsequent parts adopt a theoretical focus that is thematically organised to deal with the question of how and why English changed in the way it did, including a part addressing some specific contact-induced changes and key topics such as English as a Lingua Franca. Supported throughout with information boxes with empirical studies, the examples given are all drawn from English, but boxes with examples from other languages tie the development of the English language into changes in other contexts and settings. This book is an ideal resource for undergraduate students of the English Language and historical linguistics.
