Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 32: July 1958 We wonder how often the answer to a question is pre faced by the word well. In fact when almost any subject is introduced in the beginning of a conversation before any statement is made the word well is called upon to get a start. When one asks, What do you think of this decision in this or that case. Or What do you think of this or that statement the reply is almost always prefaced by the use of the word well. If one asks What is your Opinion of the action of the governor? In some position he is taking, instead of making a direct reply that the person addressed approves or disapproves, he almost invariably will begin by saying well. The word is especially made use of when one takes a position which might not be expected and thus begins an argument. One may say, I think this or that girl is pretty and attractive, and if his interlocutor does not entirely agree, he is apt to say, for example, Well, she is not bad looking, and mav attribute his way of thinking to the way she does her hair. A direct question may often be categorically answered ves or no, but even then not infrequently the answer will be, Well - yes or no. When the answer is I don't know, the word Well is often called upon as a starter. If one stops to think he will be probably surprised to find out how Often the word well is used as a pre face. When one considers the meaning of the word he will doubtless be surprised at its almost constant use. The real meaning of the word has nothing to do with its use as a word of introduction. Well implies among other things good health or a hole in the ground made for the purpose of getting a supply of water. As a pre face, the word has no connection with its real meaning; as indicative of this use of the word, the writer of this article finds himself saying, Well, this is all I have to say on the subject.
