I am writing this letter on January 6th. The amount to date is This is about ahead of last year. So far, we have 846 contributors. We still have until April lst to go. It will not be a surprise if we reach When you stop to consider what this amount represents in the way of interest on endowment, it is almost the same as increasing the Endowment of the College by a half - million dollars. I do not know how to express the gratitude of us all for your part in this splendid effort. The work of our V-12 Unit is highly commended by the Navy. The only problem we have had has been in the matter of messing facilities. Navy standards along the line of kitchen equipment and sanitation are very rigid. However, we are more than willing to fulfill the require ments of the Navy, up to our financial capacity, when we are told exactly what they are. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 26: June 1952 While the President of the college and the great majority Of the faculty are Presbyterians, there are also members Of other denominations and this has been the case ever since the college was founded. NO effort is ever made to induce a student to leave the church in which he has been reared. W believe that if Samuel Stanhope Smith, great Presby terian devine, educator, and man of affairs that he was, were to return to hampden-sydney, he would be gratified to see that this college in whose founding he had so great a part has kept faith with his pronouncement as to the catholic plan of the institution made before its doors were Open.
