Book Description
Cold winters, hot summers--year after year the seasons repeat themselves. But what causes them? Why is there winter in the Southern Hemisphere at the same time there is summer in the Northern Hemisphere? In summertime, why is it still light out in the evening? With simple language appropriate for young readers, non-fiction master Gail Gibbons introduces young readers to the four seasons and explains why they change throughout the year. Newly revised and vetted by experts, this updated edition of The Reasons for Seasons introduces the solstices, the equinoxes, and the tilt in Earth's axis that causes them, and gives examples of what each season is like across the globe from pole to pole. Clear, simple diagrams of the earth's orbit are labeled with important vocabulary, explained and reinforced with accessible explanations. Fascinating and easy to understand, this is a perfect introduction to seasons, earth's orbit, and axial tilt. Different effects on different parts of the world are included, illustrating the difference in climate between the equator, the northern and southern hemispheres, and the polar regions.

Book Description
In 1996, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessed the knowledge and skills of students in the areas of earth science, life science, and physical science. It also collected information related to the background of students (grades 4, 8, and 12), their teachers (grades 4 and 8), and the schools they attended (grades 4, 8, and 12). This report is intended primarily for science teachers; hence, the results presented relate directly to student performance, classroom practices, and school climate. This report also discusses students' attitudes and beliefs about science. The report is divided into four parts. In the first part (chapter 1), an overview of the assessment is provided. This includes information about the framework used in the development of the assessment, a description of how the assessmet was administered to students, and an explanation of how to interpret NAEP results. In the second part (chapters 2, 3, and 4), examples of questions and student responses are presented. These chapters are divided by grade. The third part (chapters 5 and 6) contains information collected from students, teachers, and school administrators about classroom practices, student motivation, and parental involvement in learning. Finally, the fourth part contains appendices offering a fuller description of the procedures used for the NAEP 1996 science assessment (appendix A), scoring guides for questions discussed in chapters 2, 3, and 4 (appendix B), and standard errors for the statistics presented in the report (appendix C). Racial intolerance, social change, and sweeping progress make 1908 Washington, D.C., a turbulent place to grow up in for 12-year-old Emily Soper. For Emily, life in Papa's carriage barn is magic, and she's more at home hearing the symphony of the blacksmith's hammer than trying to conform to the proper expectations of young ladies. When Papa's livelihood is threatened by racist neighbors and horsepower of a different sort, Emily faces changes she'd never imagined. Finding courage and resolve she didn't know she had, Emily strives to save Papa's business, even if it means going all the way to the White House.
