Book Description
Current railway signals require regular replacement of the tungsten lamp and are increasingly prone to failure. This report describes the preliminary design of a replacement signal unit using arrays of high-luminance, narrow-angle light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the light source. Worldwide sources of LEDs were researched and samples obtained and evaluated for luminance, spatial distribution and colour. Several optical concepts were tested, and a progression of lab models were constructed and tested photometrically and visually. Physical and electrical integration with existing CN Rail signalling systems were investigated and chromaticity differences between existing signal specifications and available LEDs were explored and minimized for red and yellow with the green achievable being less blue.

Book Description
Despite modern appearances, colour light signalling has been around since the 1920s and is just as full of subtle details and variations as 'traditional' semaphore signalling. The inclusion of a working signalling system within a model railway layout is technically challenging but adds realism and 'wow' factor. This new book contains a brief history of the development and deployment of colour light signalling in the UK; a basic explanation of how track design influences signalling design; an overview of the different types of point motor and, finally, descriptions of the different components that make up a signalling system and how these components are used and controlled. It is an extensive guide to developing and adding realistic colour light signalling to a model railway layout.

Book Description
This report describes the second phase of a research project to replace conventional lamps with solid-state light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) in railway colour light signals. Phase II focused on the design and manufacture of prototypes suitable for field viewing. Two concepts were developed, including a retrofit package for existing signals and an optimized array taking full advantage of unique features of LEDs. The report details the development process, the resultant hardware and measured performance. Partial records of major meetings and formal tests are also provided.

Book Description
TCRP report 155 provides guidelines and descriptions for the design of various common types of light rail transit (LRT) track. The track structure types include ballasted track, direct fixation ("ballastless") track, and embedded track. The report considers the characteristics and interfaces of vehicle wheels and rail, tracks and wheel gauges, rail sections, alignments, speeds, and track moduli. The report includes chapters on vehicles, alignment, track structures, track components, special track work, aerial structures/bridges, corrosion control, noise and vibration, signals, traction power, and the integration of LRT track into urban streets.
